MANSFIELD: Aaron Davis, a.k.a. "Double-A", 88, passed away early, Sunday, May 5, 2013 at Hospice of North Central Ohio, Ashland, Ohio. A native of Mansfield, Aaron was born at the old Thomas Hospital on Lexington Avenue, previously the site of the Woodland Nursing Home and now Liberty Nursing Home. Aaron was born October 10, 1924 to the late Aaron and Faye M. (Dewitt) Davis. Upon graduation from Madison High School in 1942, Aaron joined the Navy. After basic training at Great Lakes, the navy assigned him to medical training. After serving at the Philadelphia Naval Hospital, Aaron acquired sea duty and served on the brand new USS Mendocino, an attack transport ship, as a Pharmacist's Mate First Class with the Amphibious 10th Beach Battalion. Duties took him ashore at Leyte Gulf, Guam, and Okinawa. The First Cavalry were first to go ashore, in order to care for the wounded. Upon surviving the 1945 Typhoon of Okinawa and after WWII, Aaron returned to Mansfield and worked for the Mansfield Typewriter Company, before entering the real estate business in 1950.
Along with having worked in the business of buying, selling, and managing real property, for over 60 plus years, as Broker of Aaron Davis Realty, Aaron was active in many civic organizations: 62-year member of Mansfield Masonic Complex-Venus Lodge, Baku Grotto, Ruth Chapter #17 Eastern Star, No. 10 White Shrine of Jerusalem, 3-time president of the Mansfield Board of REALTORS-holding CRB, CRS, GRI, & NIREC designations, past vice-president of the Ohio Assoc. of REALTORS, past president of Richland County Regional Planning Commission, past president of Mansfield Kiwanis and past Lt. Governor Kiwanis Division 11N, Captain of United Way Campaign, Feasibility Study Committee of Mansfield City Schools, active member of First Christian Church and Little Washington Congregational Church, Richland Rural Life Center, Richland County Agricultural Society, Farm Bureau, Ohio Genealogical Society, American Legion Post #0016, and AMVETS Post 0026.
In his free time, Aaron enjoyed golf (hole-in-one, 2-times), cross-country skiing, the Buckeyes, classical & symphonic music, theater and playing the piano by ear. Aaron's favorite food included Coney Island Hot Dogs, of which he took bags of them home for his family to enjoy, chocolate milk shakes from the Dairy Queen and Apple Pie & Cheddar Cheese. He collected canes & walking sticks, telephone books, city/county directories dating back to 1928 and was proud of his collection of some 100 porcelain, miniature houses, made in England. Aaron was proud and thrilled to have been selected for the Veterans' Honor Flight to Washington, D.C.
Surviving Aaron is his devoted wife of 30 years, Sarah Margaret (Truver/Raitch) Davis, the current Richland County Recorder. Also surviving is Aaron's first wife, Ruth E. Davis of Kalispell, MT and their 5-children: Leslie Ann Davis of Mansfield, Deborah Gail Davis and Melissa Lynn (Kim) Clausen of Kalispell, MT, Jeffrey Craig Davis of New Hope, PA, and Laura Leigh Bagley of Charlotte, NC. Grandchildren, Adam James Bagley and Ian Davis Bagley of Charlotte, NC, Jared Jeffrey (Kasia Zylinska) Davis of Doylestown, PA and Lorrie Williams of Kalispell, MT. Great granddaughter, Isabella Taylor Williams of Kalispell, MT. Nieces and their families include Cheri Davis, Susie (William) Doehla, Sondra (John) Siegenthaler of Mansfield, OH, and Nancy (Jim) McKee of Medina, OH. Extended family members include Sarah's daughter, Katrina Ann Raitch (John) Blair of Tampa, FL, Jared's Mother, Deborah (William) Kline, sisters, Abigail Adams Kline and Amelia Rose Kline of Willard, OH and Jared's Grandmother, Barbara Rose Adams and close friend, Charles Heineman of Mansfield, OH.
Aaron was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Jack Davis of Mansfield.
All friends are invited to attend a memorial celebration for the life of Aaron Davis to be held at the Mansfield Masonic Complex, 1250 Middle Bellville Rd., Mansfield, OH, July 11, 2013 7:00 PM. Masonic and Eastern Star Services will be conducted. The Reverend Dave Root, Pastor of Little Washington Congregational Church will officiate. Previous Mayor of Mansfield, Edward Meehan, whose initial campaign for office was handled by Aaron, will present a special memorial. The Mansfield Board of REALTORS, represented by Real Estate Broker Mervin Shaffner, will extend a remembrance. Military honors will be presented by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Squad. Burial will be at sea in the Pacific and a head stone validating Aaron's passing will be erected at the Western Reserve National Cemetery. Refreshments, including Apple Pie, Cheddar Cheese, & Ice Cream, will be served following the memorial service, compliments of Grandson, Jared Davis and his sisters, Abigail and Amelia Kline, in the dining room.
