Catherine Hanna

WORTHINGTON: Catherine Hanna, age 96, of Worthington and formerly of Mount Gilead, died Friday morning, January 11, 2013, at Worthington Christian Village.

On June 26, 1916, Catherine was born near Roanoke, Virginia, the daughter of the late James and Margaret (Boyd) Kessler. She graduated from Sparta High School in the Class of 1934 and then received her Bachelor's degree from The Ohio State University in 1939.

Catherine started her teaching career at Croton High School. She then taught at Mount Gilead High School and ended her career at Northmor High School. She was a home economics teacher for 24 years. She was a wonderful teacher, full of energy. Many of her former students have said she was like a mother to them.

A long time member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, Catherine would often attend Bible studies and assist with the monthly community dinners at the church.

For many years, Catherine volunteered as a Buttercup Twig member at the Morrow County Hospital, and also belonged to the Morrow County Retired Teachers Association and the American Association of University Women.

Family was the most important thing in Catherine's life. She loved family vacations and taking trips to Zanesville to visit with grandchildren. She was a very generous woman and would do anything for those she loved.

Catherine will be dearly missed by her daughter, Jo Ann (Lew) Holtrey of Columbus, OH; two sons: Harley (Barb) Hanna of Zanesville, OH, Larry (Wendy) Hanna of Rockbridge, OH; five grandchildren: Caleb (Elizabeth) Hanna, Lauren (David) Sterrett, Andrew (Jana) Hanna, Chris and Terry Holtrey; two great grandchildren: Dylan Holtrey and Mason Hanna; and two great-great grandchildren: Allyson and Avery Holtrey.

In addition to her parents, Catherine was preceded in death by her first husband, Fred Parkinson, in 1947; her second husband, Harley A. Hanna, in 1981; two great grandchildren: Joshua and Jeremy Holtrey; and her brother, Mason Kessler.

The Hanna family will greet friends from 11:00 am.-2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 15, 2013, at the Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel, 67 N. Main St., Mount Gilead. Services celebrating her life will be held there immediately following at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Lori Burdette-Steele officiating. Burial will follow in Bryn Zion Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church, 75 E. High St., Mount Gilead, OH 43338.
