SHELBY: Catherine M. "Kay" Miller, age 91, resident of Shelby died Saturday, October 26, 2013 at Hospice House in Ashland surrounded by her loving family.
Born May 30, 1922 in Plymouth, Ohio to Andrew and Caroline (McMillan) Douds, she had been a Shelby resident the majority of her life. A 1940 graduate of Shelby High School, she was formerly employed with the Shelby Salesbook. Kay moved to San Francisco working with the Southern Pacific Railroad Co. then moved to White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia taking a job at the Greenbriar Hotel. After returning to Shelby, she worked at the Wilkins Air Force Depot and then took the position of corporate secretary of Mansfield Hardware & Supply Co., which she co-owned with her husband, Joseph.
Mrs. Miller was a member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Shelby Country Club, Beta Kappa Tau sorority and a member of Shelby's first Girl Scout troop. She enjoyed golf, playing bridge, traveling, watching high school sports and researching genealogy. Her most treasured moments were spending time with family.
Survivors include two daughters, Patricia (Timothy) Herring of Palmetto, Georgia and Andrea "Ann" (Phil) Downs of Shelby; one son, Charles (Sherry) Miller of Cincinnati; five grandchildren, Katie and Hal Herring, Jeff (Ashley) Downs, Brad (Angie) Downs and Christina Downs; two great grandsons, Nolan and Oliver Downs.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph H. Miller in 2001; one son, Joseph Henry Miller, II in 1964; two brothers, Andrew (Virginia) Douds and Alexander (Kathryn) Douds; and one sister, Effie (Herb) Guerin.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 AM Wednesday, October 30, 2013 from the Most Pure Heart of Mary Church. Father James Sanford will officiate with interment in Most Pure Heart of Mary Cemetery. Friends may call at the Barkdull Funeral Home on Tuesday, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM where a scripture service will be held 7:45PM.
