Chalmer Gene Dunbar

ALEXANDRIA, VA: Chalmer Gene Dunbar, 78, resident of Alexandria, Virginia, passed away at his home on January 29, 2011.

He was born October 8, 1932, in Bucyrus, Ohio, to the late Chalmer Charles and Geraldine Elizabeth (DeWalt) Dunbar.

He graduated from Willard High School in 1950. He served in the United States Army and was stationed at Fort Ord, California. In his younger days, he worked in construction and helped build the Ohio turnpike.

He graduated from Kent State University in 1961 with a major in Geology. After graduation, he moved to Washington D.C. where he worked for the Smithsonian Institution Science Information Exchange until his retirement.

He is survived by two sons and one daughter-in-law, Charles Dunbar of Prague, Czech Republic and Richard and Kristen Dunbar of Cherry Hill, New Jersey; one granddaughter, Elizabeth Warwick Dunbar; one grandson, Joshua Zachary Dunbar; two brothers, Jack Dunbar of Shelby, Ohio and Terry Dunbar of La Crescenta, CA; six nieces, four nephews, 17 great nieces and nephews; and his former wife, Sally Warwick.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Lanny Dunbar.

Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery, Bucyrus, Ohio on September 4, 2011 at 11 a.m. followed by a memorial service in Shelby, Ohio.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all this weekend. It's so great that you all can come together to remember Gene and get to know one another. I'm so sorry that I cannot be there, but Gene will always have a special place in my heart. It's so nice that he will be interred with his parents and next to his Uncle Dick, my father.
