James R. "Jim" Bierly

LUCAS: James R. Bierly

of Lucas passed away Sunday, November 25, 2012 in the Cleveland Clinic. He was 87.

James was the only child of Glenn and Ruth (Becker) Bierly born June 19, 1925 in Mansfield. He graduated from Mansfield Senior High School in 1943 and immediately enlisted in the US Army where he served his country in Central Europe and Rhineland. He was honorably discharged in April of 1946. Jim then resumed his education by attending the College of Wooster and later the Michigan School of Mining & Technology where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Metallurgical Engineering.

From the age of 28, Jim was the owner and operator of Mansfield Brass and Aluminum. He was inducted into the North Central Ohio Entrepreneurial Hall of Fame in 2008. The company remains under family ownership and is now in the third generation with his daughter Lynn at the helm.

Jim enjoyed sailing on Lake Erie. It was his favorite hobby. He was also a licensed navigator. Jim enjoyed reading, listening to classical and pops music, cross-country skiing, and being with family and friends.

Jim was a member of the Catawba Island Club, 51 Club, Our Club, Hermit Club, the Westbrook Country Club, a lifetime member of the YMCA, member and former President of the Mansfield Rotary Club, former President of the Richland County Foundation, former President of the Cleveland YPO, past President of the Richland County Chamber of Commerce, the former Chairman of the fund drive for the Richland County United Way. He was a member of First Congregational Church.

He is survived by his wife Karen (Keating) Bierly; children Craig Bierly (R U Nuts Adventures), Kyle Bierly of Mansfield, Lynn (Bill) Edmonds of Mansfield, and Lise Clancy of Lucas; stepchildren Mary Troper of Worthington, Scott Moody of Florence, KY, Molly Moody of Worthington and Megan Dininger of Lucas; grandchildren James and Madison Edmonds; step grandchildren Denver Dininger, Sam and Bella Troper, and Riley and Tanner Moody.

In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his first wife Helen (Adams) Bierly.

Friends may call Wednesday, November 28, 2012 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Finefrock Chapel of the Marion Avenue Snyder Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, November 29, 2012 in the Little Washington Congregational Church, 2323 Washington South Rd, Mansfield. The Reverend David Root will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Jim's memory may be made to the Richland County Foundation at the funeral home.
