Jean Brokaw

BELLVILLE: It was appropriate that Jean Brokaw, 84, went to be with the Lord on Good Friday, March 29, 2013. For the Savior's work of redemption on the cross, setting the stage for His resurrection was the very focus of Jean's Christian faith. No pain, no palm; no thorns, no throne; no gall, no glory; no cross, no crown. Through Christ's obedience on the cross, and God's grace, Jean enjoys God's glory.

She was born July 17, 1928 in Mansfield to parents Clyde H. and Nina E. (Ernsberger) Coe and was graduated from Mansfield Senior High in 1946.

Later that year she married Harold R. "Dick" Brokaw and they remained lifelong area residents. Jean set about the hard work of raising four daughters, loving them, and modeling Christian values. She was a member of Lexington Church of Christ.

Jean was a home-grown country girl who farmed for many years and loved being in the outdoors among God's creation. She was a superb chef and baker and enjoyed playing cards and putting together puzzles. Jean was also an excellent seamstress, much more than a hobby, her family reaped the benefits of her sewing talents.

Her love for the Lord, love for her family, and love of life will be her legacy.

She is survived by her children Sandra Van Buskirk of Bellville, Janet & Dave Oates of Bellville, Debra & James Thomas of Lexington, and Kathy & Glenn Oates of Bellville; grandchildren Brent & Christy Potts, Mitch & Melissa Potts, Chad Oates, Tracy Franko, Rhonda Masci, Justin & Andrea Thomas, Lindsay & Paul Fesler, Jason Oates and Jennifer & Brad Weaver; 16 great-grandchildren; a brother Ray (Jean) Coe of Bellville; a sister Marge Kalis of Mansfield; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Dick in 1997; and siblings Elsie Zellner, Ivy Zellner, Betty Bowman, Mary Brokaw, and Earl Coe.

Jean's family will receive friends Monday, April 1, 2013 from 4-7 p.m. at the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home. A worship service giving glory to God for the life of Jean Brokaw will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Lexington Church of Christ, 230 Delaware Street, Lexington. Her Pastor TJ Waters will officiate. Burial will follow in Shauck Cemetery.

Contributions in Jean's memory to Lexington Church of Christ or may be made at the funeral home.
