Jessie Crawford Obituary
Jessie Mae Crawford

MANSFIELD: Jessie Mae Crawford passed away Monday, November 5, 2012 in Mansfield MedCentral Hospital after a short illness. She was 87.

She was born on November 16, 1924 in Forest City, NC to parents Robert and Georgeanne (Gosse) Greene. She was one of seven children and was graduated from Rutherfordton High School.

Without her knowledge, Jessie's entire life changed in the blink of a camera shutter. She sent a snapshot of herself to her friend in the Marines; upon one glance his Corps buddy, William, declared, "I'm gonna marry that girl." Jessie and Bill wrote to each other during the war and she was especially nervous when it came time to meet her Yankee in person. Their love was stronger than social convention and Jessie became Mrs. Crawford when she married the love of her life in 1946.

Jessie "Jet" and Bill moved to the Mansfield area in 1967 and Jessie got a job at Mansfield Opportunities Industrial Center. She worked there until her retirement after 20 years of service.

Despite her long career, she was most proud of being a loving wife and mother to her husband and children. Jessie was a picture-perfect homemaker who kept her house pristine and always had a freshly baked dessert waiting for friends and family.

Jessie excelled at everything she did. She was an accomplished seamstress and worked wonders with a crochet hook. A self-made fashionista, Jessie kept her eye on the latest fashion and jewelry trends. She would dance at every opportunity and especially loved listening to Gospel music. In short, Jessie was a true Southern Belle in everything except her zip code. In the South, roots, place, family and tradition are the essence of identity. Jessie kept her Southern identity for a lifetime.

Jessie was a member of the AMVETS Post No. 26 Auxiliary and of VFW Post #9943 Auxiliary.

Jessie is survived by her children: William C. (Viki) Crawford of Lucas, Barbara L. (Burley) Sizemore of Mansfield, and Rebecca C. (Rodger) Smith of Mansfield; grandchildren: Joseph M. (Dawn) Crawford, Benjamin C. (fiancée, Katherine Sauks ) Haber, and Jonathan C. (fiancée, Mary Zaher) Haber; a great-grandchild Colby Lane Crawford; and a brother Dennis M. Greene of Rutherfordton, NC.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Claude Crawford, on November 25, 1986; her granddaughters: Meredith Rae Haber and Amy Lynn Obrynba; and siblings: Clyde Greene, Alda Bowens, Tew Greene, Louise Rash, and William Greene.

Friends may call Friday, November 9, 2012 from 4 to 7 p.m. and Saturday, November 10, 2012 from 9:30 to 11 a.m. in the Finefrock Chapel of the Marion Avenue Snyder Funeral Home where funeral services will immediately follow at 11 a.m. Pastor Doyle Peyton will officiate. Burial will be in Mansfield Cemetery.
