John Martin Vollmer

MANSFIELD: John Martin Vollmer, 79, of Mansfield passed into eternal life Monday, December 30, 2013 at home following an extended illness.

The son of Kenneth and Edna (Fairchild) Vollmer, John was born June 29, 1934 in Johnson County, Kentucky. After growing up in Waverly, Ohio, John moved to Mansfield in 1951.

As a young man John served in the Air Force during the Korean War. He was stationed at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico. John was honorably discharged in 1954.

On June 8, 1957, he married Roma Jackson.

John earned his degree in engineering and first worked for Taylor Metal. He was also certified in Robotic Technology. John worked for Ohio Brass and retired from the former Budd Company.

Christ came first in John's life. Passionate about sharing the gospel, John also loved worshiping to gospel music. In 1985, John founded Mansfield Grace Temple of which he was still serving as senior pastor.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 56 years Roma Vollmer of Mansfield; son William (Charlotte) Vollmer of Burbank, daughter Firbia Edna (Steven P.) Smith of Mansfield, and a daughter adopted in his heart, Janita Caskey of Mansfield; 17 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; one great great-grandaughter; brothers Maurice Vollmer, Victor (Leene) Vollmer, sister Linda (Warren) Massey; brothers-in-law Thomas (Sue) Jackson, Bill (Caroll) Jackson, and Carl Johnson; sister-in-law Belva (Johnny) Jackson; and two special friends Jim Johnson and Bill Fisher; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. The family would also like to express their appreciation and gratitude to John's special caregivers, Ruth James and Cheryl Kash.

Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his son John Martin Vollmer II, brothers Irvin and James Vollmer; sister Armilla Johnson; sister-in-law Betty Vollmer; and a very special buddy, his dog Sampson "Sammy".

The family will receive friends Thursday, January 2, 2014 from 12pm-2pm in the Finefrock Chapel of the Marion Avenue Snyder Funeral Home where funeral services celebrating the life of John Martin Vollmer will begin at 2pm. Rev. Bill Fisher and Rev. Thomas Jackson will officiate with Pastor Dan Clouse assisting as well.

Military honors performed by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail will be held at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Lantz Cemetery.

Memorial contributions to the Vollmer Family Memorial Fund or to Southern Care Hospice may be made through the funeral home.
