Katherine was a devoted mother and grandmother who gave countless hours to many community activities. In the 1950's she was very active in the Appleseed Trail (Mansfield) Girl Scout Council where she served as a Girl Scout troop leader for 10 years taking her high-school age Troop 67 on a month-long camping trip to Mexico City, served as a camp counselor, was chairman of Camp Walhonding Girl Scout Camp in its early years and served as head outdoor trainer for the council for many years.

In addition she served on the mayor's historical preservation committee for 5 years, organized the Oak Hill Guild, chaired the Kingwood Garden Center committee, and was an active member of Kingwood's Flower Arrangers Club and Johnny Appleseed Questors Antique Club.

She was passionate about her grandchildren, flower arranging, antique dolls and restoring antique furniture. She and her husband traveled extensively and were often found camping with their 5 grandchildren on many of those trips.

Her husband of 56 years, E. William McCarrick, preceded her in death. She is survived by daughter, Sally Heckert (Richard) Uhde of Johnstown; son, J. Rick (Judy) Heckert of Mansfield; five grandchildren, Mindy Heckert (Rich) Willman, Jeffrey (Vivien) Uhde, Kimberly Uhde (David) Barboza, Scott (Heather) Heckert, Chris (Lisa) Heckert, 13 great-grandchildren, and a sister, Teresa Smith. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Fredrick and Michael Hallabrin; twin sisters, Elizabeth Weidle and Susan Rabal; and two great-grandchildren.
