Lawrence M. Spreng

PERRYSVILLE: Lawrence M. Spreng, 84, of rural Perrysville, died at his home following a lengthy illness early Saturday morning, June 23, 2012 surrounded by his family. Lawrence was born October 29, 1927 in Richland County, the eldest son of the late Walter G. and Monna Marie (Miller) Spreng. His family settled in Green Township when Lawrence was 8 years old and he was a 1946 graduate of Loudonville High School. He was a dairy and grain farmer and an active member of the Ohio and Ashland County Holstein Associations. He was a member of Loudonville FFA Alumni, the Loudonville Farm Club, the Farm Bureau Council of GHL and was the advisor of the Hilltoppers 4-H Club. Lawrence served his community as a Green Township Trustee for 45 years before retiring in 2007. He was also a member of the Green Township Zoning Board and for 22 years served on the Greenlawn Union Cemetery Board. Lawrence was a board member of Loudonville Equity and the Kettering Hospital, Loudonville. In 2004 Lawrence received the Mohican Area Community Service Award in recognition of his many years of service to the Loudonville-Perrysville area. He was a life-long member of Zion Lutheran Church, serving on the church council many years.

For recreation, Lawrence loved Lake Erie fishing, snowmobiling, his Tuesday Poker Club, and following the Loudonville Redbirds, the Ohio State Buckeyes, the Cleveland Indians, and all the teams that his nephew Ron Zook coached during his college and professional football career. As a proud father and grandfather he loved watching his children and grandchildren in all of their many sporting and scholastic lives.

Lawrence loved farming, fishing, golfing, card playing, travelling, snowmobiling and spending time with family and friends. His biggest attribute was the ability to give and never ask for anything in return.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Donna Mae (Etzwiler) Spreng, whom he married August 20, 1949; his son and daughter-in-law, Jim L. and Beckett Spreng of Savannah, GA; his daughter and son-in-law, Becky S. and Pat Drouhard of Cardington; 6 grandchildren, Barron Lawrence (fiancé Erica) Spreng, Joan Morgan Spreng, Anna Marie (Todd) Greene, Joshua Spreng (Amy) Drouhard, Peter Joseph Drouhard, and Tabitha Rose Spreng; great-grandson, Zachary Lawrence Greene; his special nephew, Dr. William (Jody) Spreng, DVM of Wellington; and his brothers, Charles W. (Linda) Spreng and Don F. (Sally) Spreng, both of rural Perrysville; many nieces, great-nieces, nephews and great-nephews; and special caregivers: Dawn Greer of Perrysville and the Joni Miller Family of Danville. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister Betsy Marie Spreng.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 26 at 11:30am in Zion Lutheran Church, Loudonville with Rev. Scott Henderson officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Perrysville. Friends may call Monday from 1-4 and 6-8pm in BYERLY-LINDSEY FUNERAL HOME, LOUDONVILLE. Memorial contributions may be made to Zion Lutheran Church, 222 E.
