MANSFIELD: Marilyn "Lyn" M. LaPorte, 73, of Mansfield, OH passed away peacefully at home with her husband by her side February 21, 2014 after a battle with cancer. Born June 28, 1940 in Cleveland, OH, she was the daughter of Roger Lee Metzger and Eleanor Mae (Inches) Metzger.
Lyn attended Euclid Senior High, Shaker Heights High, and Miami University. Lyn and Tom relocated from Shaker Heights to Mansfield in 1979 when Tom became International Sales Manager for the Tappan Company. Lyn was a long time active member in Episcopal Church activities and served as President of Episcopal Church Women. In 1987, she and her husband Tom opened Little Professor Book Center. In 1993, they moved it to the Carrousel District and renamed it Main Street Books. She was a member of the Chamber of Commerce and served on the board for six years. Always participating in Main Street Mansfield activities, she opened and ran the Tiny Tim Shoppe, a Christmas shop for children, for 12 years. She operated the shop until her retirement in 2007. Main Street Mansfield generously chose her to serve as Grand Marshal of the Christmas Parade. She had also served on the Friends of the Library Board and most recently served as their Secretary. Lyn enjoyed biking, golfing, and traveling to visit the grandchildren. She also volunteered at What Goes Around Thrift Shop for Hospice of North Central Ohio.
Surviving Lyn are her husband of 51 years, Thomas R. LaPorte, and three sons, Thomas R. (Brenda) LaPorte Jr., of Urbandale, Iowa, children Brooklyn and Thomas III; Ted Bradford (Shelley) LaPorte of Mooresville, NC, children Maddie, Claire, and Isabelle; Timothy John (Sondra) LaPorte of Charlotte, NC and daughter Gabrielle; brother, Bob (Fran) Metzger of Shaker Heights, OH; sisters in-law, Nancy (Phil) Meek of Frankfort, MI and Susan Hofelich of Westlake, OH; and dear college friend Jane Greenwood and late husband John.
A memorial service, conducted by Pastor Dave Root and Father John Jorden, will be held Thursday, February 27, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Little Washington Congregational Church, 2323 Washington South Rd., Mansfield, OH 44903.
