The Guest Book is expired.
ASHLAND: Nellie M. Gongwer, 92, of rural Ashland, died Thursday morning, June 13, 2013 in Brethren Care Village, Ashland. Nellie was born July 13, 1920 in Mansfield and was the daughter of the late Lester and Bertha (Whittemire) Kershner.
She was a 1938 graduate of Hayesville High School and a resident of the Widowville-Vermillion Township area most of her life. Nellie dearly loved her family and the Lord, witnessing to many during her lifetime. She was a member of Perrysville Baptist Church where she was a former Sunday school teacher and also a member of the Ashland Senior Citizens, helping with their monthly dinners and baking her delicious pies. She loved her flowers and vegetable garden which resulted in much canning and freezing. Additionally she was famous for her fried chicken from her home-grown poultry. But Nellie is perhaps most well-known as the "Hummingbird Lady of Widowville". Since 1970 she and her husband fed the hummingbirds at their home, Hummingbird Haven, which resulted in visitors from various states and countries stopping by. Her unique experience resulted in invitations to be the guest speaker before several organizations. Nellie also enjoyed quilting, crocheting and reading until her vision became a problem.
Nellie is survived by her daughter and son-in-law: Marilyn (Duane) Cline of rural Ashland; 1 grandson: Tim (Tami) Cline of Ashland; 4 great-grandchildren: Shane Hiller, Bryce Hiller, Tyler Cline, and Trevor Cline; and 1 sister: Caralou Mitchell of Perrysville. She was preceded in death by her husband David Gongwer in 1991; her granddaughter: Marcie Hiller; and 2 brothers: Kenneth and Robert Kershner.
Funeral services will be held Monday, June 17 at 10:30 AM in LINDSEY FUNERAL HOME, LOUDONVILLE with Rev. Howard Burnett officiating. Burial will be in Vermillion Cemetery, Hayesville. Visitation was held Sunday, from 6-8 PM in Lindsey Funeral Home.
