Nellie Shenberger

MANSFIELD: Nellie Shenberger, 74, passed away early Friday morning, June 3, 2011 at Hospice of North Central Ohio. Born April 3, 1937 in Mansfield, she was the daughter of Sarah (Letizia) and Michael Morelli. Nellie was a first generation Italian-American, with her father emigrating from Italy and her mother from Sicily. She was a graduate of Madison High School. On August 23, 1958, she married Mervin L. Shenberger, whom precedes her in death. Nellie retired from General Motors after 35 years of service as a Payroll Accountant. She then worked part-time at Macy's in the Jewelry Department. Nellie enjoyed visiting casinos, quilting and creating special memories with her grandchildren.

She is survived by two children, Cheryl Shenberger Rettig and Lt. Col. Michael (Alona) Shenberger; grandchildren, Sara E. Rettig, Andrew M. Rettig, Elizabeth M. Shenberger and Seth M. Shenberger; sister, Corrine (Daniel) Devich; brother, Antonio (Carolyn) Morelli; brother-in-law, Val (Pat) Shenberger; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Elizabeth Hicks; brothers-in-law, Richard, Jim, Leroy (Junior) and Sam Shenberger.

Friends may visit from 3-6 p.m. Sunday, June 5, 2011 at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 S. Diamond St., Mansfield. Funeral services will be Monday at 1:30 p.m. in the funeral home with Father Jim Halleron officiating. Burial will follow in Mansfield Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of North Central Ohio, 1050 Dauch Drive, Ashland, OH 44805.

I met Nellie through my husband, who worked at GM. She was an awesome person, and when she was your friend, she was your friend for life.
