MANSFIELD: Nowhere does Scripture forbid you to laugh. Verda Barr had a sharp wit, friendly sense of humor and affable personality; she loved to evoke a smile or laughter. That was the way God made her…and she embraced it.
Sharp as a tack right up to her final days, Verda passed away Saturday afternoon January 18, 2014 in Winchester Terrace. She was 92.
Born Verda Mae Thrush May 4, 1921 in Polk to Paul and Ethel (Dill) Thrush, she was a star basketball player at Polk. She transferred to graduate from Butler High School, where she was named to the All Ohio Girls Basketball Team, and served as a homecoming attendant.
In 1941 she married J. Donald Barr, and they remained in Mansfield to raise their family. Verda was an accomplished bowler and worked at Hartman Electric 42 years.
She was a member of Berean Baptist Church, and loved her church family and their fellowship.
She cherished her family, which includes sons and daughters-in-law James & Laura Barr of Mansfield and Chuck & Jennifer Barr of Marion; grandchildren Douglas & Mary Barr of Dublin, Andrew & Karen Barr of Pensacola, FL, Cathy & William Courtice of Columbus, Christy & Chuck Hollman of Nevada and Chip Barr of Columbus; eleven great grandchildren; sisters-in-law Consetta "Cetty" Thrush of Mansfield; Marcia Kasper of Bellville; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1971. Also deceased are her siblings William, Raymond, Richard, Robert and Marguerite Thrush.
