Doris Pierce Obituary
Doris E. Pierce

MANSFIELD: Doris Pierce was a big bucket of movie theater popcorn. Just as a handful of the salty kernels makes you crave something to drink, Doris gave her students a thirst for learning. She did so in a way - like the popcorn she couldn't put down - that inspired them to learn a little bit more, and then a little bit more, and still a little bit more.

She was an encourager to countless Lexington High School students to embrace the English language, understand how to use it effectively, and recognize the importance of its mastery for their continued education. Her students loved her because Doris loved what she did, she did it well, and her every motivation was to better them.

Doris passed away Wednesday evening March 19, 2014 in Ohio Health MedCentral Hospital. She was 84.

Born Doris Eileen Gilbert April 24, 1929 in Dayton, she was the daughter of Arthur and Ruth (Hamilton) Gilbert. She was graduated from West Alexandria (Ohio) High School, earned her Bachelor's degree in English Education from Ashland University and earned her Master's in English from Indiana University.

Her career in education started at Hillsdale Schools. She later taught in Brunswick and Mansfield City Schools before accepting a position in Lexington Local Schools in 1966. Mrs. Pierce taught 21 years in the district, retiring in 1987.

Doris will be remembered for her wicked sense of humor! She was an ardent supporter of Kingwood Center; had been an active member of First Congregational Church, and enjoyed playing bridge.

She is survived by her children, Rebecca and Oliver Thurneyssen of Lexington, Dana Arthur and Mary Pierce of Charlotte, NC, Jennifer and Paul Huffman of Cincinnati and Gilbert Pierce of Columbus; nine grandchildren; four great grandchildren; sisters Ann Kiamy of Piqua and Joyce and Bob Nisius of West Alexandria.

She was preceded in death by her husband, with whom she enjoyed a 60-year honeymoon, Leslie E. Pierce on November 26, 2012. Also deceased are a great granddaughter; a sister Dorothy Schutt, brothers Chet Gilbert and Nelson Gilbert; and an infant sister.

The Pierce family will receive friends Monday, March 24, 2014 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home, where her memorial service will follow at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution to invest in the lives of others to Richland County Foundation or to support Kingwood Center may be made at the funeral home.

Snyder Funeral Home is honored to serve the Pierce family, and private messages of sympathy and support may be made to them at: SnyderFuneralHomes.com.
