MANSFIELD: Marjorie "Margie" Palm, 95, passed away peacefully at her home on March 26, 2014. Margie was born just in time for lunch on August 18, 1918 in Mansfield to Frank and Rhea (Sackman) Underwood.
Margie graduated from Mansfield Senior H.S. in 1936 earning a full scholarship to Otterbein College in Latin Studies; her goal was to become a Latin teacher. Unfortunately, she was unable to accept the scholarship due to her father's illness. Margie instead went to work at Westinghouse. In her free time she was one of The Buckingham Players (a group of actor-employees at Westinghouse) and enjoyed participating in many plays. Margie loved to dance and swim and could be found most weekends at "the Lake" (i.e. Lake Erie) with her friends enjoying the big bands of the era.
In 1942 she married her first husband, C.V. Kelly. During WWII she kept busy doing charity work with her soriety sisters in Beta Kappa Tau. In 1963 she returned to work when her marriage ended and worked for Dr. C.M. Quick, Ophthalmologist, where she was an optician for 20 years before retiring in 1983. In 1981 she married R. B. Palm and they remained married until his death in 1997.
Margie also enjoyed traveling, entertaining and playing golf. She was loved by all who knew her (especially her daughter and grandson) and her bright smile and optimistic attitude drew people to her.
Margie is survived by one daughter, Peggy Gordon; one grandson, Cameron Gordon; a sister, Norma Sleek; three nieces and one nephew, Karen Pruitt, Linda Hyatt, Tom and Arlyn Rush; and, several great and great-great nieces and nephews and cousins. She is preceded in death by her parents, her first and second husbands and a wonderful, generous fiancé, Frank Yarlett.
