MANSFIELD: Raymond "Max" Sayre passed away on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2014, at Primrose Retirement Community. He was born on November 9, 1921 in Trimble, Ohio to Georgia (Moody) and William Sayre. Max started working at an early age, helping do chores on his grandfather's farm, and at age 11 he was delivering groceries from his father's grocery store. Following graduation from Jacksonville-Trimble High School, he moved to Mansfield because he didn't want to work in a coal mine. He was employed at Sears, where he met his wife, Eileen, and they were married on August 23, 1942. He always said he could return her under the Sears warranty but he waited until it was too late. He was later employed at Consolidated Steel Shipyards in California until volunteering for service in the US Army Air Corps. He served in the European theatre for two and a half years and was stationed in Foggia, Italy. Upon returning to Mansfield, he was employed at Westinghouse for 25 years before embarking on a new career in sales.
In 1971, he and Eileen moved to Arizona where they spent 35 years before returning to Mansfield in 2005.
Max was a charter member of AMVETS Post 26 in Mansfield, Ashland Lodge #151 F&AM, and AASR, Valley of Canton.
He was preceded in death by his parents and eight brothers and sisters.
In spite of being handicapped in later years, Max was able to maintain a sense of humor with his funny little sayings called "Maxism's". He loved his dogs, his cars, especially his 1958 gold and white Edsel Citation, he loved music and dancing, and his wife, Eileen, not necessarily in that order. When he was no longer able to dance, he enjoyed moving around with the music in his wheelchair.
He received the most respectful and loving care from Primrose staff and OhioHealth MedCentral Hospice.
There will be no calling hours and a private service will be held. Memorial contributions may be made to OhioHealth MedCentral Hospice, 335 Glessner Ave., Mansfield, OH 44903 or The
, 15120 Collections Center Drive, Chicago, IL 60693. The Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors is privileged to serve the family of Raymond Max Sayre.
