SHELBY: Wanda J. Humphrey, age 89, resident of Shelby died Sunday, March 2, 2014 in Crestwood Care Center.
Born June 17, 1924 in Shelby to Glenn and Bertha (Crum) Humphrey she had been a Shelby area resident all her life. Wanda graduated from Shelby High School in 1942 and went to work at the Shelby Autocall. In 1947, she started nursing school and graduated as a registered nurse from Mansfield General Hospital in 1950. After passing the State Board exam, she enlisted in the Navy Nurse Corps. She served at Great Lakes in Illinois, Guam, Yokuska, Japan, and at St. Alban's Navy Hospital on Long Island, NY during the Korean Conflict. After six years as a Navy nurse she returned to Shelby and went to work at Shelby Memorial Hospital. She worked as an operating nurse for 26 years retiring in 1983.
She was a member of the First Christian Church. Wanda was an avid fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes, Cleveland Indians and loved attending Shelby Whippet football games.
Survivors include her cousins, Carolyn "Susie" Clark and Martha Clark, both of Shelby and several additional cousins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her stepmother who raised her, Blanche Humphrey, cousins, Ray Clark and Gene Clark
Graveside services will be held 10:00 AM Thursday, May 8, 2014 in Oakland Cemetery with Reverend Russell Yoak officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Richland County Veterans Burial Detail. In lieu of flowers, memorial expressions may be made to the Wanda June Humphrey Nursing Scholarship, C/O the Shelby Foundation, 142 N. Gamble St., Shelby, OH 44875.
