SHELBY: Colleen A. Pipes, 81, of Shelby, died Wednesday, April 30, 2014 in Crestline Nursing Center after an extended illness. Born July 3, 1932 in Mansfield, Ohio, she was the daughter of Leo O. and Esther (Gage) Smith.
Colleen graduated from Madison High School in 1950 and later received on the job training as a surgical technician at Shelby Memorial Hospital. She enjoyed gardening, growing beautiful flowers and plants. She also enjoyed camping, picnics and cooking. Colleen was an avid reader and letter writer and enjoyed hearing from her family and friends.
Survivors include her sons, Joseph and Daniel Irelan of Shelby; daughters and sons-in-law, Kim and Marvin Smedley of Shelby, Pam and Alan Savage, Jane and Archie Smith, all of Mansfield and Kathy and Forest Butler of Grover, NC; sixteen grandchildren; thirty-one great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; a brother, Roger "Buzzy" Smith of Bellville; two sisters, Frances Hiltner of Galion and Sharon (Hans) Georg of Ashland; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Audrey Spognardi and Judith Smith and an infant brother, Harry Smith.
A funeral service will be held Monday, May 5, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 S. Diamond St., Mansfield with Pastor Rich Hurles officiating. Friends may visit one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Shiloh.
