Bennie H. Showalter

MANSFIELD: Bennie H. Showalter, 88, of Mansfield, OH died peacefully on May 15, 2014 following a long illness. Bennie was born April 27, 1926 in Akron, OH.

He was the son of Ervin and Georgia (Brotton) Showalter. He grew up and went to school in Wirt County, WVa. After high-school, Bennie served in the military as a U.S. Navy Seaman. He married Annette Burton in August, 1949 in Akron, OH. They moved to Mansfield in 1956 where Bennie owned and operated Ben Showalter's Truck Service for over 20 years. In the early 80's Bennie moved to Texas to manage the City of Houston's heavy equipment fleet. During his 10+ years in Houston, Bennie became a 'real' Texan. He was active in the Houston rodeo, BBQ cook-off, trail rides and horse shows. His passion for horses was evident by his "Pony Express" horse trailer, Ostrich boots and Stetson hat. Following retirement from the City of Houston, Bennie returned to Mansfield in 1992. He enjoyed cooking his famous Texas brisket for large family gatherings and local parties. Bennie was an avid deer hunter and rarely missed a NASCAR race. In the 60's, he served on the NASCAR Grand National series pit crew. Bennie never met a stranger and everyone who knew him can share a cherished, funny story. Bennie had a unique way about him (and the way he told stories) that was admired by all who knew him. He was an original member of the Prosperity Brethren Church of Wirt County, WVa, where his grandfather was the residing minister.

Bennie is survived by his daughters, Kathy (Robert) Showalter-Amon of Mansfield and Kelly (Bruce Bird) Showalter of Richmond, TX; sons, Keith (Debrah) Showalter of Mansfield, Kevin Showalter of Mansfield, and Scott (Julie) Rush of Ashland; step-sons, Brett (Leticia Dishong) of Houston, TX, Brian (Maria) Dishong of Milwaukie, WI, and Shane (Crystal) Dishong of Mansfield; eight grandchildren, Annette (Sean) Knuutila, Michael McGee, Rachel Showalter, Kristina (Tyler Hawk) Showalter, Maygan Tackett, Misti Showalter-Granados, Kody (Brooke Hensley) Rush, Wyatt Rush and eight (step) grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; former wife, Diane Dishong of Mansfield; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Annette May (Burton) Showalter; son, Kerry Showalter; three sisters, Jessie Florelle (John) Mendiola, Marge (Dan) Bartholomew, and Violet (Ray) Henderson; and two brothers, Ervin D. and Kenneth (Rusty) Showalter.
