CRESTLINE: Mary J. Shafer, 96, formerly of 373 Emmet Street, Crestline, died Friday, May 23, 2014 at Crestline Nursing Home, Crestline. Mary died peacefully, with her family at her bedside.

Mary was born in Crestline on March 14, 1918 to the late Michael and Marie (Dougherty) Scanlon. She married Bernard J. Shafer on May 21, 1949 and he preceded her in death on June 22, 1970.

Mary lived here her entire life. Mary graduated from Crestline High School, Class of 1936 and went on to attend Mansfield Business School. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Crestline where she was longtime member of the former Altar Rosary Society. She was a Legal Secretary for her brother Leo's law office, Scanlon and Berger Attorneys, which later became Scanlon, Berger, and Garner Attorneys, Crestline. She was an avid bridge player and loved to play Bingo. A very social person, Mary loved to be around people. When the time was right for her, Mary chose to enter Crestline Nursing Home, making it her home and the staff a part of her life. The residents with whom she lived became her 'neighbors' and Mary was often seen checking up on them and visiting from room to room.

She is survived by her two daughters and son: Mary Eileen and Doug Holm, Crestline, Ann and Mike Skinner, Raleigh, NC and Michael Shafer, Crestline; her six granddchildren: Emily and Chris Dunn, Jon and Michiko Skinner, Eric and Crystal Holm, Mary Beth Holm, Ben Holm, and Carrie Holm; and her five great-grandchildren: Erin "Flower" Dunn, Owen Dunn, Hugo Skinner, Kenzo Skinner, and Luke Holm. She is also survived by her four nieces: Maureen Sharrock, Winifred Myers, Patricia McKeever and Helen Dearth with whom she was very close.

She was preceded in death by her three brothers: Leo J., Paul and Clarence Scanlon and her nieces: Mary Ann Kossick and Sheila Lewis.
