Fred R. Scheets

MANSFIELD: Fred Scheets had a strong mind and a soft heart. He walked the fine line of a man determined that his way was the best way, balanced with the stubborn love for the welfare of his family and friends. Despite his best attempts to hide it, his soft heart was manifest often toward the family he loved so deeply…and also toward his constant companion Miniature Schnauzer, Archie.

Fred went to be with the Lord Monday afternoon June 9, 2014 from Ohio Health MedCentral Mansfield Hospital. He was 77.

Born May 4, 1937 in Mansfield to Fred M. and Sue (Leitenberger) Scheets, he remained a lifelong resident. He was graduated from Mansfield Senior High School in 1955 and served six years with the U.S. Navy.

Fred retired as an inspector with Gorman Rupp and enjoyed fishing and watching Western movies. He was a member of Crossroads Community Church, where he was a member of a small group, served as a greeter and was active with the Kindness In Action ministry. He and his wife Karen loved to travel. "Where haven't they gone" is a better description of their travels across the U.S. with their dearest and closest friends.

The family he so dearly loved include his daughters Kathleen (Aaron) McGhee of Lexington, Kristeen (Jeffrey) Cline of Mansfield and Kelley Ward of Mansfield; grandchildren Brian (Tiffany) Bickers and Brandon (Danielle) Bickers all of Mansfield, David (fiancée Cynthia Burgos) Cline stationed with the U.S. Air Force in Pensacola, FL, Elise (fiancé Zac Robinson) Cline of Columbus, Kara Ward, Rachel Cline and Hannah Cline all of Mansfield; great grandchildren Brevyn, Brayden and Brielle; his brother Robert (Marjorie) Scheets of Lexington; sister Jane Kohner of Winona, MN; brother-in-law Tim Burke of Winona, MN; brother-in-law Charles P. (Tina) Hendrickson of Mansfield; several nieces and nephews and a large circle of treasured friends.

His wife of 50 years Karen (Hendrickson) Scheets went to be with the Lord June 5, 2013; also deceased are his parents, a sister Jean Burke; a brother-in law Edward Kohner; a nephew Carl Scheets; and his in-laws Charles R. & Kathryn Hendrickson.

The family will receive friends Friday, June 13, 2014 from 5-8 p.m. in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home, where his funeral service will be held Saturday June 14, 2014 at 11 a.m. Pastor Deering Dyer will officiate. Burial will follow in Lexington Cemetery, where American Legion Post #535 will hold graveside military honors.

Contributions in Fred's memory to either the Wounded Warrior Project or Richland County Humane Society may be made at the funeral home.
