Jerry Malcolm "Mac" Dean

LEXINGTON: Mac Dean had a vision for the world. His imaginative mind was always at work envisioning ways to improve everything. In his garage, he could take an ordinary item and dress it up "Mac-style" usually including the addition of foam rubber, wooden wheels, or both (Mac had a good time in his garage). More than a tinkerer and accomplished woodworker, Mac had the gift to see a need, and the talent to satisfy that need - not just with his "garage concoctions" - but with the people in his life, too.

Following a 13-year courageous battle with cancer, Mac passed away in his Lexington home, surrounded by that family he loved so dearly. He was 68.

Born June 23, 1945 in Mt. Vernon to Jerry M. & Eunice V. (Beaver) Dean, Mac was graduated from Lexington High School in 1963.

Mac worked as a journeyman tool and die maker, retiring from Therm-O-Disc with 25 years of service.

Described as a wonderful husband and good father, Mac did not suffer fools. He always knew the right thing to say - even when the right thing was not the popular thing. In his succinct manner, Mac didn't argue, but rather explained why he was always right. His dry sense of humor could turn sarcastic, but never unkind.

The kindness of his heart that led him to anonymously help others, extended to animals and birds. He loved the critters (well, except the chipmunks and cats) and none were more precious than his Australian Red Heeler Rosie.

Such an avid reader, when Mac had no historical non-fiction available, he'd take to reading anything - and was known to even have read the phone book.

He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, and had formerly served on church council.

Mac just loved to hang with his family. They include his wife Penny (Baki) Dean; their children Amber Cartwright of Cincinnati, Pete (Jennifer) Dean and Travis (Tara) Dean all of Lexington, and Zac (Danielle) Dean of Westerville; grandchildren Malcolm Henry Cartwright, Sawyer Cartwright, Gavin Dean, Chloe Dean, Kathryn Dean, Mary Dean, John Malcolm Dean and Isla Dean; his brother Robert Dean of Baltimore; his sister Peggy Hergatt of Summerville, SC; and a brother-in-law Mark (Donna) Baki of Lexington.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Deborah Dean.

In celebration of Mac's 49th anniversary with Penny, and in remembrance of a "not your run of the mill guy" the family will receive friends Thursday, July 10, 2014 from 6 to 7 p.m. in Christ Lutheran Church, 159 Frederick Street, Lexington, where a memorial service will be held at 7 p.m.

Contributions in his memory may be made to Hospice of North Central, 150 Dauch Drive, Ashland 44805 or Ohio Bird Sanctuary, 3774 Orewiler Road, Mansfield 44903. The Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home is serving the family.
