ONTARIO: Irene "Hazel" Thomas, 86, of Ontario, died July 17, 2014. Born December 7, 1927 in Rainhill, Liverpool, England, she was the daughter of George and Mary (Pitchford) Prescott. Hazel married Harold Thomas on March 29, 1952 at St. Anne's Church in Rainhill, Liverpool, England. She and Harold moved to the United States in 1954 where she went to work for the Ohio Bureau of Employment Services. Retiring after 30 years of service, Hazel and Harold moved to Gulf Shores, Alabama where they lived for over 25 years. A feisty and loving lady, she enjoyed traveling all over the world, her favorite destination being Playa del Carmen, Mexico. She also enjoyed watching motorcycles races, politics, and bingo.
Hazel was a member of the order of the Eastern Star Ruth Chapter #153, Grace Episcopal Church, and The Nomads travel group. She was a life member of the American Legion and a social member of the Elks.
Surviving are her children, Geoff (Kim) Thomas of Ashland and Chris (Jo) Thomas of Mansfield; grandson, Craig (Jackie) Thomas of Carrollton, OH; niece, Barbara Logue of Pittsburgh, PA; nephew, Steven Ivady; and great nephews, Sean and Matt Logue of Pittsburgh, PA.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 57 years, Harold Thomas; brother, Norman Prescott; and sister, Doreen Ivady.
A celebration of life will be held Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 S. Diamond Street, Mansfield, conducted by Rector Emeritus David Sipes. Family and friends are invited to visit at the funeral home from 5-7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to OhioHealth MedCentral Hospice, 335 Glessner Ave., Mansfield, OH 44903.
