MOUNT VERNON: Betty Jean Spohn, age 80, of Mount Vernon and formerly of Butler passed away on Saturday, August 16, 2014 at the Ohio Eastern Star Home in Mount Vernon.
She was born on April 16, 1934 in Bald Hill, New York to the late William and Martha (Hyde) Luther.
Betty received her B.S. in Education from The Ohio State University and her Master's Degree from Akron University. She was a special education teacher for over 25 years in the Mount Vernon School District. Betty was a former member of the North Liberty United Methodist Church, was a member of the Ohio Eastern Star in New York and was a volunteer for Hospice of Knox County.
She is survived by four daughters, Dawn (Joseph) Porter of Butler, Brenda Wilson of Lexington, Patty Hamblin of Wooster, Peggy Severns of Apple Valley; nine grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; her brother John (Kay) Luther of New York; three sisters, Susan Koon of New York, Peggy (Richard) Moore of Arizona, Joan Luther of New York; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband L. Tom Spohn; her daughter Kay Marie Barton; and her sister Kay Elizabeth Luther.
Friends may call on Friday, September 5, 2014 from 5-6 PM at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home in Mount Vernon. A celebration of life service will follow beginning at 6 PM.
