Bettie Ann Alford Obituary
Bettie Ann Alford

MANSFIELD: Bettie Ann Alford, a servant of the Lord, finished the Good Fight and met her Savior face to face on Tuesday evening, August 19, 2014. Bettie was 86.

She was born January 21, 1928 in Hosston, Louisiana, one of four children to the late Cassell and Bettie Wilkerson and graduated from Hosston High School. It was at the start of WWII when she met a young soldier passing through town on a maneuver exercise, Herman B. Alford. During the war, they courted through correspondence, and were married on February 14, 1946. Together, they shared 50 years before Herman passed away August 8, 1996.

Bettie and Herman lived in Lancaster, California for over 35 years. There, Bettie was an active member of First Assembly of God. She enjoyed the Christian Women's Club and had a presence in all church activities.

The very definition of a Proverbs 31 woman, Bettie was a devoted wife and mother. Raised in the South, she believed in traditional households, but carried a voice of influence in their home. She delighted in family gatherings as seeing everyone together brought great joy to her heart.

Independent and self sufficient, Bettie had a wide range of talents. She enjoyed outdoor activities such as fishing and took up trap shooting with Herman. Both were championship trap shooters traveling to meets throughout Southern California. She assisted with the daily chores on the family's five-acre ranch, and was also experienced in refinishing furniture and helping with various contractor tasks as their home was built.

Bettie was also quite refined and often described as an elegant lady. She enjoyed shopping and traveling with her sister. Bettie handled situations in life with a great deal of poise and grace, the very embodiment of a gracious woman.

She is survived by two sons Dr. James and Gloria Alford of Mansfield and Drs. Jerome and Alma Alford of Gallup, New Mexico; five grandchildren Jameson Smythe and Ashley Nicole Alford, Jessica Hope Alford of Mansfield, Benjamin Robert Alford of American Fork, Utah, Annette Marie Alford of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Brian James Alford of Grand Rapids, Michigan; she also had two great granddaughters Marla Madison Alford and Ashlen Nicole Alford; and many friends and caregiver family members at Wedgewood Estates.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law Annette and Gerald Purvis, and two brothers and sisters-in-law James and JoAnn, and Jeter and Betty Jo Wilkerson.

A memorial service remembering and celebrating Bettie Ann Alford will be held Saturday, August 23, 2014 at 11:30 am in the Community Room at Wedgewood Estates. Pastor John Stocks will officiate. Interment will be in Mansfield Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions in memory of Bettie may be made to Ohio Health MedCentral Hospice may be made at the service or mailed to Snyder Funeral Home, P.O. Box 3085, Mansfield, Ohio 44904.
