Obituary Condolences

Steve L. Meeks

BUTLER: Steve Meeks loved the outdoors. He loved wildlife, hunting, camping, fishing and motorcycle rides. It was one of those motorcycle rides - one fateful day in Pennsylvania - that changed Steve's life. Accused of chasing off the deer with his motorcycle engine by another hunter, Steve learned his accuser was also from North Central Ohio. The two chatted and became best friends. This friendship led to the founding of the Ohio Bowhunters Association, and Steve served 12 years as the association's president.

The man known statewide for his hunting skills passed away Sunday, April 10, 2011 in Knox Community Hospital. He was 69.

Born March 11, 1942 in his grandparents' log cabin near Butler, Steve was graduated from Butler High School and remained a lifelong Butler resident.

He worked as a mechanic and later in the parts department with Weekley Chrysler Dodge Jeep for 35 years.

Described as selfless, Steve never met a stranger and poured unconditional love on his family. He was a good listener who was "always there" for family and friends and like many Dads, was always right in his advice and opinions - aggravatingly so!

Remembered for his "buddy-ness", he was the kind of patriarch who taught the men in his family to be a great husband and father; and he was the kind of grandpa who took the kids camping, and made even occasional rides in his 1978 copper brown Chevy Silverado special events.

He is survived by his wife Carolyn (Grant) Meeks, whom he married October 21, 1960 ("I could not have picked a better man!"); their children Tina & Steven Thompson of Butler, Bill & Tammy Meeks of Butler, and Anita & Dan Schuller of Bellville; grandchildren Kimberly & Ben Neer, April Schuller, Austin Schuller, Allison Schuller and Allisa Schuller; great granddaughter Riley Ann Neer; brothers, sisters and their spouses Gary & Mary Meeks of Easley, SC, Dave & Gerri Meeks of Bellville, Rodney & Rita Meeks of Butler, Elaine & Mike Chillemi of Okeechobee, FL, Nina Schmidt of Butler and Rusty Meeks of Ashland, KY; numerous nieces, nephews and aunts.

He was preceded in death by his parents Marvin & Wilma (Oswalt) Meeks; a brother Gerald "Bezzy" Meeks; a nephew Robbie Meeks; and his best friend Bill Conrad.

The Meeks family will receive friends Thursday, April 14, 2011 from 3 to 7 p.m. in the Bellville Snyder Funeral Home, where his funeral service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. His good buddy Pastor Ken Kinley will officiate. No hearse for Steve, he will be taken to Bunkerhill Cemetery in the bed of his beloved '78 Silverado.

Memorial contributions to Hospice of North Central Ohio, Worthington Township-Butler Rescue Squad, or the Palliative Care Unit of Knox Community Hospital may be made at the funeral home.

The Meeks family so appreciates the prayers and support from their family, friends and community.

Snyder Funeral Home is honored to serve the Meeks family, and private online condolences to them may be at: www.snyderfuneralhomes.com
