SHELBY: Thelma R. Stevenson, age 96, long time resident of Shelby, Ohio died Thursday November 8, 2012 in Loveland, Colorado.
Born Sept. 6, 1916, in Galion, Ohio to Joseph K. and Lula Mae (Hatffield) Kunkel she had been a Shelby resident the majority of her life moving to Colorado in 2009. A 1933 graduate of Galion High School, she was then employed with North Electric and the Galion Iron Works. On Nov. 19, 1939, she married C. C. "Pinky" Stevenson at the First English Lutheran Church, Galion, OH, and moved to Bellefontaine, OH, for 6 months where her husband was a pharmacist. In 1940, they moved to Shelby to join F. R."Steve" Stevenson at Stevenson's Drug Store where she was employed for many years.
Mrs. Stevenson was an active member of the First Lutheran Church, Shelby, where she had served as the altar guild chair for many years, was co-chair of the altar flower committee, pianist for the Sunday school, was a member of the Senior Fellowship group, Table Talk Sunday School class, Women in Transition (WITS), and a neighborhood shepherd. She was a member of the Mansfield Federation of Women and a 75 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star Rizpah Chapter # 153. She was a former member of the Child Conservation League 2, the Shelby Country Club and the Masque Club of Galion. During her lifetime she enjoyed her family, bridge, crossword puzzles, Scrabble, walking, traveling, golf, and visiting friends in nursing homes.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, John J. and Louise Stevenson of Colorado; one daughter, Anne S. Benninghoff of Michigan; four grandchildren and spouses; nine great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; two step great-great grandchildren; two nephews and spouses; one niece and spouse, Sally and George Hays; great nieces and nephews. Her husband preceded her in death on Dec. 3, 1994, as well as her parents; an infant sister; her sister and spouse, Jeanne and Paul DeSilets; her brother-in-law and spouse, Steve and Ruth Stevenson; and a son-in-law, William S. Benninghoff.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 PM Friday November 16, 2012 from the First Lutheran Church in Shelby. Reverend Russel Yoak will officiate with interment in Fairview Cemetery, Galion. A brunch will be served 10:30 AM Friday at the church for family and friends with calling hours to be held from 12:00 to 1:00PM.
