Beverly Jean "Bev" Woogerd

MANSFIELD: Bev Woogerd "could make gravy out of hot dogs." Whether she spent all day cooking, or quickly whipped up a meal, she could make something out of nothing...and that something was delicious. Her meatloaf, noodles and mashed potatoes were family favorites, and she had "gobs of cookbooks" and loved watching cooking shows. Bev never learned to pare down recipes, so her batches of scalloped potatoes, beef and noodles, or oyster dressing often resulted in "meals-on-wheels," extra food she made that was delivered to her family's homes.

The Woogerd family has much to be thankful for: a loving and caring wife, mom and grandma who loved the Lord Jesus Christ, but the cooking responsibilities this holiday will be another's as Bev went to be with the Lord Monday morning November 19, 2012 from Hospice of North Central Ohio in Ashland. She was 77.

Born March 14, 1935 in Mansfield, she was the daughter of Glenn L. and Mary Bernice (Bond) Hedges, and remained a lifelong area resident. While a first-grader at the former Lincoln Heights Elementary School she met a boy, Edwin L. Woogerd. Bev knew from the first time she met Ed that she would become his wife. The two were married on Ed's leave from military service on July 8, 1956.

Right out of high school Bev started working at the telephone company as an operator. First with Ohio Bell, then later with Galion Telephone and United Telephone Company. It was a perfect career for Bev - she loved to talk on the phone. She retired from Sprint following a career that would eclipse 35 years.

Bev was blessed with a sense of humor, and blessed others with her hearty laughter and grand story-telling. One hug was never enough for Bev, and in a glimpse to her warm and caring heart, she never released a hug first.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years Ed, sons Rick Woogerd of Mansfield, Michael Woogerd of Lexington and Timothy Woogerd of Marion; her daughter Christine Ferguson of Lexington; grandchildren Crystal Adkins of Mansfield, Brian Woogerd of North Carolina, Michael & Sara Woogerd of Mansfield, Reed Woogerd of Columbus, Tyler (Ashley) Woogerd and Natalie Woogerd all of Lexington, Keith Woogerd of California, Mark (Melanie) Ferguson of Lexington and Hollie (Greg) Hill of Mansfield; 13 great grandchildren; and a host of friends.

The Woogerd family will receive friends Wednesday, November 21, 2012 from 1 to 3 and 5 to 7 p.m. in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home, where her funeral service will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. The Rev. George Reece will officiate.

Contributions in her memory to Hospice of North Central Ohio may be made at the funeral home.

Snyder Funeral Home is honored to serve the Woogerd family, and private online condolences may be made to them at:
