Russell L. "Russ" Messimer

MANSFIELD: Russell L. "Russ" Messimer, 67, of Mansfield, died Sunday, December 2, 2012 at MedCentral Mansfield. Born June 15, 1945 in Crestline, Ohio he was the son of Russell Messimer, Sr. and Helen (Potts) Messimer. A 1963 graduate of Mansfield Senior High School, he was a veteran of the United States Army serving during the Vietnam War. Russ retired from MANCI where he was a corrections officer and had also worked for the Ohio State Reformatory as a corrections officer, Mansfield Aircraft and Richland Newhope as a supervisor. He enjoyed spending time in the Simpson Room at the Library, researching his family genealogy, woodworking, building birdhouses, remodeling and being outdoors. He was an ultimate caregiver ~ his family always came first and foremost and he will be truly missed.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Lavina (Wilson) Messimer; a son, Jeff (Amanda) Messimer of Houma, Louisiana; a daughter, Lisa Hall of Mansfield; a grandson, Lane Harr of Mansfield; three sisters-in-law, Bonnie (Jerry) Whitehead, Rita (Lon) Culp and Brenda Chance all of Mansfield; four brothers-in-law, Darel Wilson of Mansfield, Danny Wilson of Roseville, Keith Wilson and Rick Wilson both of Mansfield; a host of nieces and nephews; and a very good friend of the family, Roger Hicks of Shelby. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two aunts, Evelyn McLaughlin and Betty Sharp; and three brothers-in-law, George, Roy and Larry Wilson.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, December 6, 2012 at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 S. Diamond Street, Mansfield conducted by Celebrant Mark Dettmer. Full military honors will be conducted by the United States Army. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park. Friends may call one hour prior to the services, from 1:30 - 2:30 p.m., at the funeral home on Thursday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ohio Bird Sanctuary.
