Bret David Mackey

WRIGHTWOOD, CA: My health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak, but God remains the strength of my heart; He is mine forever. Psalms 73:26

Bret David Mackey was a man of few words, but abundant in strength and wisdom beyond what those closest to him could see. Born in Mansfield, Bret was the precious son of David and Rebecca Mackey. He fulfilled his role as older brother to Brian and Kimberly with love and a protective dignity that few could fully appreciate.

Bret began his journey with Christ at a very young age. Though his journey in this life has taken him through many valleys and peaks, he held true to this quote by Henry David Thoreau: "We should impart our courage and not our despair." Despair is not something Bret did. He nourished his dreams and interest with vigor and excitement. Never one to be still for long, Bret chose the things he loved and experienced them to the fullest. Hunting, fishing, flying, nature, books, and writing were some of his favorite things. "One is not born into the world to do everything, but to do something."

Bret graduated from Mansfield Christian School in 1988. Some of his accomplishments include serving in Desert Storm, having a work ethic no one could match, and always willing to help anyone in need. Perhaps his greatest accomplishment was becoming a father to Izaiah, Grady and Shelby. His beautiful children reside in Iowa with their wonderful mother and step-father Amy and Thomas.

Life dealt many things Bret's way, but always a survivor he accepted that, "…things do not change; we change." Finally the road Bret traveled ended in California. He passed away peacefully cradled in the mountain that he loved. He is finally experiencing all of the peace and joy the Lord promised us in Revelation 21:4, "…and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away."

Bret is survived by his parents David and Rebecca Mackey of Mansfield. Brother Brian (Chris) Mackey and their children Tait, Zoe, Micah, Molly and Landon of Littleton, CO. Sister Kimberly (Matthew) Snyder and their children Aubrey and Xavier of Zanesville. Grandmother Christina Mackey of Galion. Numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by grandparents, Dick and Velma Robison and grandfather Willard Mackey, as well as his best friend George Stolz.

A memorial service celebrating Bret's life will be Friday, January 25, 2013 at 10:30 am in First Alliance Church, 291 West Cook Road, Mansfield, Ohio 44907. The Rev. Dr. Steve Burggraf and Bret's brother Pastor Brian Mackey will officiate. Burial will be in Mansfield Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Bret's memory may be made to First Alliance Church.

Bret is loved deeply and will be greatly missed, but we are comforted by these words: A prayer to you is untouchable. You will hold it close to your heart and protect it with your sovereign hand. You will not encompass me in judgment or place words in my mouth. You will carry my broken spirit across the chasm of this journey and drench it in healing. You will be my mirror of grace and will gift me with mercy and understanding. You will hear my heart when a word fails to be spoken from my lips. Rest in Him now, Bret.
