SHELBY: Ray Ellsworth Russell, age 94, resident of Shelby, died Monday, April 22, 2013 at the home of his daughter in Shelby.
Born January 7, 1919 in Kirkpatrick, Marion County, Ohio to Eber and Hattie (Smith) Russell he had been a Shelby area resident since 1960. A 1937 graduate of Bellpoint High School, he was a veteran of the US Army Air Core ground crew serving during WWII in the Philippines. He worked at various local farms also McMillen Feed in Marion before he was employed with General Motors retiring in 1973.
Ray was a charter member of Calvary Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday School teacher and Deacon. He served as a Boy Scout leader for Troop#4 in Marion for many years.During his retirement years, Ray regularly attended the GM Retiree monthly dinner and enjoyed woodworking and carpentry.
Survivors include one son, Ellsworth (Evelyn) Russell of Shelby; two daughters, Clariene (John) Stiteler and Luella Conley, all of Shelby; 13 grandchildren, John Stiteler, Jr. of Galion, Diana (Jeff) Erickson of Texas, Sharon (Ron) Noel, Jr. of Shelby, Jennifer Russell of Columbus, Derek Conley of Columbus, Britany Smith of Fredericktown, Angela (Dean) Downing of Ashland, Nathan Mark Russell of Ashland, Ivy Strong and Jamy Russell, both of Lexington,; 17 great-grandchildren, Christopher & Matthew Strong, and Dekota Horning all of Lexington, Jessica, Nicolas, & Austin Downing and Eli Russell all of Ashland, Russell Smith of Fredericktown, Ryann Conley of Columbus, Matthew (Kristen) Erickson of Texas, Brian (Sherrill) Erickson of Utah, Amber (Joshua) Basco of Texas, Jason Noel US Navy, Brandon Noel of Shelby, Ryan Stiteler of Plymouth, Jessica and Julianna Stiteler of Shelby, 11 great great grandchildren; nieces, nephews and other relatives.
In 1997 he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 57 years, Henrietta (Garrett)Russell whom he wed October 26, 1940; one son, James Russell in 2005; one granddaughter, Denise Russell; one grandson, Larry Stiteler, one great-grandson, David Erickson; two brothers, Ernest and Arthur Russell; and one sister, Doris Sappintgton.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, April 25, 2013 from the Calvary Baptist Church in Shelby. Reverend Steven L. Schag will officiate with interment in Marion Cemetery. Friends may call at the Barkdull Funeral Home in Shelby on Wednesday from 5:00 to 8:00 PM and at the church on Thursday from 10:00 to 11:00 AM. Memorial expressions may be made to MedCentral Hospice.
