MANSFIELD: David "Beeper" E. Coffman, age 71, of Mansfield passed away Wednesday, April 24, 2013 in Galion Community Hospital.
David was born June 30, 1941 in Mansfield to Willard and Evelyn (Bodell) Coffman. He graduated from Mansfield Senior High School. After school he went on to work for the Sun Produce Company in Mansfield in 1959. He later joined the U.S. Army and served 13 months in Korea. He was honorably discharged in 1965. He then hired in at General Motors, where he worked for 30 years in the shipping department. He retired in 1995.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Elks Lodge #56, Ontario Post #31 AMVETS and American Legion Post #181 of Bucyrus.
David loved the game of slow pitch softball when it started in the Mansfield area. He started playing in 1958 until 1995, 37 years of a lot of fun and he met a lot of great people. He also loved to ski at Clear Fork Ski Area, where he was on the ski patrol for 13 years. He loved working with wood in his garage, playing cards, and watching any kind of sports on television. He loved his old cars and trucks, working outside and was an avid fan of the Michigan Wolverines. He loved the life that he lived.
He is survived by his step-children Todd (Lisa) Snyder of Shelby and Lisa Matula of Milan; son-in-law Gary Vaughan; grandchildren Laci (Matt) Balster; Mackenzie, Kyle and Adriana Matula; Kristy (A.J.) Howard; Matthew, Luke, and Jacob Snyder; Nick (Felicia) Vaughan; Katie (Josh) McDaniel; five great grandchildren; a sister Sandy Zeigler of Jensen Beach, FL; a sister-in-law Phylllis J. Coffman of Ft. Myers, FL; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his former wife and best friend June M. (Swank) Snyder Coffman; a son Scott Coffman; a step-daughter Linda Vaughan and a brother Bill Coffman.
Friends may call at the Finefrock Chapel of the Marion Avenue Snyder Funeral Home from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, April 28, 2013. A memorial service will immediately follow at 5 p.m., officiated by the Rev. Kent Joy.
