A. Eugene "Gene" Love

MANSFIELD/SHELBY: A. Eugene "Gene" Love, age 95, resident of of Shelby died Wednesday morning, May 1, 2013 at The Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Ashland.

Born June 24, 1917 to Jack and Gladys (Kidwell) Love, his entire life was spent in the Shelby/Mansfield area. A veteran of the US Army Air Corps he served during WWII.

Gene was employed as a chef at the Leland Hotel, Topper's Restaurant in Mansfield and the Shelby Country Club for many years. He studied the accordion in Boston and was the founder of "The Gene Love Band" performing during the 30's. He was an accomplished musician who taught organ and accordion lessons for nearly 60 years. An excellent cook, he enjoyed cooking for family and friends and was known for his secret spaghetti sauce.

Survivors include his wife, Betty (Weber) Love whom he wed October 5, 1940; three sons, Rick (Pat) Love of Mansfield, Greg (Chris) Love of Ft. Collins, Colorado and Gary Love of Columbus; six grandchildren, Jeff and Jay Love, Jenelle Love-VanAusdal, Matthew Love, Christopher Love and Anthony Dulin; six great-grandchildren, three step-great grandchildren, two sisters-in-law, Gretchen Whitney of Shelby and Dana Love of Mansfield; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Jacque Love and brothers-in-law, Richard Whitney and Henry "Bud" Weber.

Memorial services will be held 11:00 AM Monday, May 6, 2013, at the Barkdull Funeral Home in Shelby with Reverend Paul Lintern officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home Monday from 10:00 to 11:00 AM. A luncheon will be held following the services at the Shelby Senior Citizen Center, 154 N. Gamble St., Shelby.In lieu of flowers, memorial expressions may be made to Hospice of North Central Ohio, 1050 Dauch Drive Ashland, Ohio 44805.
