R. James "Jim" Shull

MANSFIELD: R. James "Jim" Shull, 89, of Mansfield, passed away Thursday, June 20, 2013 at MedCentral Mansfield following a short illness. Born April 2, 1924 in Ashland, Ohio, he was the son of Noah and Marabelle (Forbes) Shull. Jim graduated from Ashland High School in 1942 where he played football, baseball and basketball. He then attended The Ohio State University where he played football for Paul Brown until joining the United States Navy serving during World War II. When he returned from the war, he played football for Ashland University until graduating. He was employed by the United States Government retiring after 37 years of service. He enjoyed traveling and has been to all 50 states mostly on his motorcycle as he was a motorcycle enthusiast and owned several of them. He also enjoyed swimming and working out at the Ashland YMCA up until a few weeks ago.

Surviving are his wife, Margie (Volz) Shull; two sons, Jeffrey (Shannan) Shull and Lee (Kelly) Shull all of Mansfield; 11 grandchildren, Carrie Whiteman, Noah Shull, Joseph Shull, Kenneth "Buddy" (Amber) Rosebrook, Aliya (Justin) Arnold, Kalyn (Matthew) Michael, Stephanie Buzzard, Tyler Buzzard, Danielle Day, Katie (Willie) Wamsley and Alexxis Shull; and nine great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Stephen Shull; a daughter, Susan Shull; and a brother, Lyle Shull.

Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 26, 2013 at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 S. Diamond Street, Mansfield. Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, June 27, 2013 at the funeral home conducted by Pastor Robert Stull. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery where full military honors will be conducted by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail. Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church or the Ashland YMCA.
