Helen Marie Stephens Shade Mahan

MANSFIELD: An angel is someone you are always happy to bump into. Helen Mahan had a lot of angels in her life. She was surrounded by a loving family, had numerous dear family members as angels who have passed before her, and amassed an impressive collection of angel dolls - to remind her of both.

Helen is reunited with loved ones, as she passed away Tuesday, September 17, 2013 in University of Kentucky HealthCare, Lexington, KY, following a fall in her home. She was 77.

Born August 22, 1936 in Glendale, WV to Ivan V. & Helen Marie (Barnhart) Stephens, she came to Mansfield at the age of nine. Helen was graduated from Madison High School and worked on the assembly line at Tappan Manufacturing, retiring in 1981. She later worked for Mansfield City Schools as a head cook, planning menus and placing food purchase orders.

Helen loved reading her Bible every day and was a member of Ontario Free Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir. She was a life member of the V.F.W. Post #3494 Auxiliary.

Described as "Girly Girl," Helen loved her jewelry and her bling, but was not so delicate that she couldn't bait her own fishing hook. She was skilled at crocheting, knitting, crafting and cooking - her potato candy became a family favorite - and had a friendly personality. She never met a stranger.

Helen was preceded in death by her first husband Richard Shade, her second husband Bertley Mahan, sons Randy W. Shade, Timothy Shade and Ricky Shade; a daughter Deborah Shade; a granddaughter Nova Shade; brothers Victor and Robert Stephens; and sisters Rozella Merritt and Peggy Anderson.

She is survived by her daughter Kay Marie Tackett of Morehead, KY; daughter-in-law Frieda Shade of Mansfield; grandchildren Stacey (Tom) Burgess, Amber (Brandon) Hawkins, Luke Mullins, Toccia Mullins, Chase Barnett, Candice (Mark) Caris, Caylynn Rhodebeck (fiancé Ashton Pennington), and Shelby Shade; six great grandchildren and three on the way; a brother James Stephens and several nieces and nephews.

Her family will receive friends Sunday, September 22, 2013 from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Finefrock Chapel of the Marion Avenue Snyder Funeral Home, where her funeral service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. Pastor John Johnson will officiate. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park.

Contributions to her family may be made at the funeral home.
