Dorothy Hershey Obituary

Dorothy Arlin Hershey

NORWALK: Dorothy Arlin Hershey, 87, of Norwalk, Ohio, passed away Sunday evening, October 13, 2013, at Stein Hospice Care Center in Sandusky, Ohio.

She was born April 7, 1926 in Mansfield, Ohio to the late Harold W. and Emily (Pace) Arlin and came to Norwalk, Ohio in 1954.

Dorothy was a graduate of Mansfield Senior High School and Miami University. She was employed by Norwalk City Schools as a substitute teacher in the late 1950's and was head of the drapery department at Hills Interiors from 1960 to 1980. Dorothy was a volunteer in the Fisher-Titus Hospital gift shop for 10 years, accumulating over 8,000 volunteer hours. She also was a sweater angel, making hundreds of sweater sets for newborn babies. Dorothy was a member of the Girl Scouts of the United States of America (GSUSA) for 80 years, serving as the Norwalk Girl Scout neighborhood chairman from 1956 to 1968. She was also a member of the Norwalk First United Methodist Church, and was a former member of the Norwalk Women Jaycees.

Dorothy was an avid sports fan, along with her late husband, Howard, who was the Athletic Director at Norwalk High School. She also loved to travel, and spent her last years doing so with her husband and daughter. Dorothy was extremely proud of her father, Harold Arlin, who was the first, ever, radio announcer, and for whom Arlin Field in Mansfield, Ohio is named.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter and son in law, Lura and Gary Magi of Huron, Ohio; by her son and daughter in law, David and Barbara Hershey of Tiffin, Ohio; by four granddaughters, Gail Hershey of Westerville, Ohio, Kellie (Dennis) (Magi) Palmer of Berlin Heights, Ohio, Sarah Hershey of Suffolk, Virginia, and Emily Magi of Huron, Ohio; and by one great grandson, Landon Arlin Palmer.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Howard A. Hershey; and by her brothers, Ralph Arlin and Edward Arlin.
