Allen Johnson Obituary

Allen H. Johnson A resident of Novato, California passed away peacefully in his home May 8, 2014 at the age of 83. He was born in Hebron, Illinois and moved to San Rafael in 1959. He was a graduate of Northern Illinois State Teachers College and Colorado State College. He served in the Army in Germany. He taught for five years in Illinois before moving to San Rafael where he taught industrial arts for 26 years at Davidson Middle School. He was an active member of Marin Lutheran Church in Corte Madera and current member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Novato. He touched the lives of every person he encountered with compassion, inspiration, love and craftsmanship. He sought and pursued the greatness of every individual he came to know. He leaves behind his loving wife Patricia Johnson of Novato; son Phil, wife Julia and children Eric and Annie, Johnson of Greenville South Carolina; and daughter Sherri Johnson of Sunnyvale CA. Allen was also grandfather to Patricia's 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was predeceased, in 1985, by his first wife, Martha Stander Johnson. His family invites all friends to join them in celebrating his life and to remember the gifts he gave that live on through us. A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 23rd at 2:00 PM, at Good Shepard Lutheran Church, 1180 Lynnwood Drive, Novato, 94947. So sad to hear of the passing of Mr. Johnson! I just was telling a story to my friends daughters whom asked me how I learned to fix things... I said Mr. Johnson's shop class (75-78)! I learned so much from him and his class was my favorite! Thanks for the great lessons and of course the elephant planter box which is stashed away with my other treasures...

I was in “Mr. J's” shop class from '72 to '74. Many happy memories…too many to write. A few stand out. At the end of class of the first day, Mr. J asked if someone could help with a project after school. All the other kids filed out, but I raised my hand and said, “I'll help! I'll help!” After that I almost always stayed in shop after school ether working on my project or helping Mr. J. In fact I probably spent more time in shop after school then doing homework! Eventually the Johnson family and mine became life long friends. I can see Mr. J helping the big man in the sky with a few fix-up projects now.
PS I see a few of you were in Davison about the time I was. I wonder if we meet then?

MR. J! "Leave the line!" (I was just hollering that to my Son last weekend.)... I took Shop at Davidson in '73-75 and I can still calculate a Board Foot and I leave the line most of the time. In '89, I was walking into The Peppermill in Greenbrae late one evening. Mr.J was walking out with what I imagine was a little glow. I introduce my self; "Hey! Mr.J! I'm a Machinist at Chevron! "That's fine lad, you were never much of a Woodworker"...RIP Mr. J.
