Florian, Joan Belmonte
Joan Belmonte Florian Joan, age 75, transitioned on February 27, 2015, while on vacation in Mexico with her cousins and friends. She was born May 2, 1939 in San Francisco, CA, the daughter of Carmelina and Dan White. Joan spent her early years living in a rooming house that her mother operated; a place that was filled with musicians, artists and writers. She graduated from Mission High School at age 16 and earned a B.A. from UC Berkeley. Soon after graduation, she married Bob Florian and she embarked with him, during his US Army deployment, to live in Germany for two years. Upon their return to the States, they soon went their separate ways. Joan returned to school and earned a Master's Degree in Clinical Psychology from San Francisco State University. She had a twenty-year career serving as a school psychologist in Marin County. She then had a second career as an owner/ administrator of a residential care home for the physically and mentally disabled in Reno. Never one to rest, even after retirement, she earned a Practitioner of Religious Science License and a Hawaii Real Estate Salesperson License. In her spare time she enjoyed reading, hiking, cooking, traveling, going to the theater and dining and shopping with friends. Over the years she actively participated in the community. She attended the Center for Spiritual Living, Reno, provided services to those recovering from addictions, hosted weekly meditation groups, attended yoga classes, sang in the choir, and most recently, was taking hula classes in Kaunakakai. Joan was independent, strong-willed, intelligent, upbeat and giving and she made a meaningful impact on all of those who were fortunate to have known her. She taught those dear to her the importance of health, spiritual well being, support of family, how to laugh and enjoy life, and how to march forward, to the beat of your own drum, with confidence. We celebrate her full life and her continuing bright light. Joan is survived by her sister, Susan (Bob) English; daughters, Katie (David) Belmonte, Katharine (Viktor) Espudo, and Anna (Jim) Sop; grandchildren Ruby and Levi Parish and a number of other relatives and close friends. There will be a private ash scattering and celebration of life on a chartered boat in San Francisco Bay, off of Sausalito, on September 5, 2015.
