Clara Ginetta Nichols (Ascani) Clara died peacefully at home on April 18, 2014 after a long battle with Alzheimer's and cancer. She has joined her loving and devoted husband of 60 years, Bill Nichols, united again for eternal happiness. Clara was born in her beautiful city, Florence, Italy on November 22, 1924 to Mario Ascani and Assunta Franci (Nonna Tina to all of us). She lived in Florence with her parents and siblings Lina, Ada and Aldo, all of whom predeceased her in recent years. Although they suffered greatly during the war years, Clara managed to survive with a strong will and great pride for her country and family. Always ahead of her time, she began working at Banco Nazionale di Lavoro in 1942 where she remained until her marriage to Bill in 1954. Their courtship and romance will live on as a fairy tale for our family. Clara's union with Bill changed her life forever. His career in the Air Force took them across the globe to California, Washington DC and Norway. After Bill left the Air Force in 1960, they moved to be closer to Bill's family in Tennessee and Indiana. In 1963, opportunities in California called and the family moved. Through all the changes and moves, Clara lovingly cared for her family and home. Once settled in California, she began her lifetime love of tennis, sewing, cooking and gardening. She was a devoted grandmother, mother, friend and wife. She was elegant, graceful and extraordinarily beautiful. Her homes were always welcoming and warm. She is survived by her children Linda Nichols Kapnick (David), Daniel Nichols (Aimee) and William Nichols, her grandchildren, Carolyn Hunter (Rob)and Daniel Kapnick (Natalie), her great-grandchildren, Maxavier and Scotland Hunter. In Italy, she is survived by her niece Paola Ascani (Daniele Selmi) and her first cousins, Marcella and Cesarina Franci. The family wishes to thank the wonderful and loving staff at Senior Access, where Clara enjoyed many years of support and the nurses and doctors at Hospice by the Bay, who helped care for her at the end of her life. A memorial service will be held at 12:30 PM on Saturday, May 3, 2014 at St. Isabella's Church in Terra Linda.
