Born in Laurel, Neb. as the seventh child to Christian and Margaret Jelsbak Hansen, immigrant farmers from Denmark, he attended school in Fontana, CA, where the family moved to cultivate an orange orchard. At age 17, Clifford enlisted in the Army
and served as a paratrooper with the 505th Parachute Regiment in Fort Bragg, NC. He was trained as a Surgical Technician and completed his enlistment as a Private First Class. During WWII, three of his sisters were also on active duty; Evelyn as a WAC, Helen as a SPARS, and Luella as a Marine, while his brother Robert served in the U.S. Army Aircorps (killed in action, 1943 over Ploesti, Romania). where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in political science. He continued his studies for a second degree, and graduated with a Bachelor of Laws degree (J.D.). Settling in San Francisco, he established a successful practice as a tax accountant. After passing the bar exam, he was admitted as an attorney and counselor to the State Bar of California, and subsequently able to practice before the U.S. Tax Court. With Irma Dennings, the love of his life, Clifford shared a house near the ocean in Daly City for over thirty years, until her death in 1990. He retired in 2004 and moved to live in an apartment at the Maria B. Freitas senior community in Terra Linda. It was his home until late 2012, when he required nursing home care during the last few weeks of his life. January the 8th, Clifford Hansen was laid to rest with full military honors at the National Cemetery in Riverside, CA.
