Joyce A. Mavis

Joyce A. Mavis Joyce A. Mavis peacefully left us on September 21, 2013 at the age of 72. Joy was born in Rhode Island. She was the first person in her immediate family to graduate high school and college. She received a BA degree in psychology and mathematics from Pembroke College (Brown University) in Providence, R.I. where she met her husband of 50 years, Jack Mavis. They have been residents of Tiburon since 1986. Joy is also survived by her son Darrell, his family, and her son Todd. Joy was the consummate mother. Her sons, their families and her pet Bichon were her primary joys. Having lived in many parts of the U.S. during Darrell and Todd's educational years, she literally went to school with them from K to 12th grade as a room mother, a teacher in their classrooms, and a debate coach. When they graduated from high school and went to college, she also graduated from full-time teaching and became a substitute teacher for many years in southern Marin school districts. Joy had a passion for travel. When her husband retired, they spent many months cruising the world onboard ships, traveling continents by car and train, as well as, visiting Africa on safari. She always enjoyed returning home to be with her pet Bichon, Bisou, and walk the Tiburon waterfront on a daily basis. A private service will be held at Mount Tamalpais Mortuary in San Rafael per Joy's wishes followed by a Celebration of Life Memorial Reception for friends and family at a later date. The family requests donations be made to UC Davis Veterinary Teaching Hospital, One Shields Ave., Davis, CA 95616 or Hospice By the Bay, 17 E. Sir Francis Drake Blvd., Larkspur, CA 94939 in lieu of flowers.
