Michael McLean A beloved husband and successful entrepreneur, Michael McLean died peacefully on November 7, 2013. He was 58 years old. Born in Greenville, PA, Michael came west to California with his family at the age of three. He grew up in Mill Valley, where he learned to surf and sail, and spent long afternoons exploring Mt. Tamalpais. He became an avid motorcycle rider, graduated HS and started his own painting business. By the time he was 19, he had two trucks and 5 employees. A few years later, at the age of 21, a tragic motorcycle accident left him paralyzed and changed the course of his life. His strong will and loving family helped him to adjust, and he went on to be an entrepreneur again. He started working with computers in his garage providing computer systems for people and companies at a time when the technology was too expensive and complex for many to own outright. Discount Computer Rent became a multi-million dollar business in Marin County, and Michael built and supplied computer systems to companies including Lucas Arts, IBM, Kaiser, and so many more. In 1995, as business was thriving, a reporter
at the Marin IJ asked him to reflect on how his quadriplegia impacted his work. He said simply, "I can do anything that any able bodied person can do in the high tech field. Handicaps dissolve to a great extent." He met the love of his life in 2000. Luz Maria Robles was drawn to his quiet sense of humor, his intelligence, and the kindness he showed to those around him. They were married in 2001. Michael McLean was devoted to his wife and family, and loved to host gatherings. His warmth and hospitality will be missed all who knew and loved him. Preceded in death by his mother Jeanne, Michael is survived by his wife, Luz McLean; father, Robert McLean; brother Andy McLean, his wife Alice, and their children Kate and Michael; as well as numerous relatives and friends in California, Pennsylvania, and Mexico.
