Nellie Stella Whitmore

Nellie Stella Whitmore June 21, 1932 - May 1, 2013 Passed away peacefully at home on a beautiful spring morning surrounded by her family and beloved cat Hillary. Nellie's long and productive life has been lived to the fullest. Her memory will live forever in our hearts. Nellie was born to Frank and Frances during the Depression on a homestead in Northern Alberta. Her parents were hard working Polish immigrants who raised five children. At an early age, Nellie developed a strong work ethic with responsibility. She supervised her three younger siblings always persisting in "getting the job done well." After graduating from St. Catharines Collegiate, She pursued nursing studies in London, Ontario. Following her graduation, San Francisco became Nell's destination. There, she had a long and successful career as a registered nurse and supervisor in various hospitals and medical facilities. Eventually, Nellie settled down and married the love of her life, John. They were blessed with twins, a daughter Christina and a son Christopher. Later, Nellie made her home in Mill Valley where she raised her children as a single and dedicated parent. Throughout the years, Nellie relished visits from her grandchildren, Aidan and Maya, and her many nieces and nephews. She enjoyed cooking special dishes such as golumpki and stuffed peppers to the delight of all. Another passion of Nell's was gardening. She grew prize tomatoes, herbs, roses and fruit trees. It was an honor to be gifted a jar of home made plum jam. Nellie enjoyed art galleries, theatre, museums, fine dining, traveling, skiing, dancing and frequent trips to the Napa Valley. Shopping for antiques, reading, crossword puzzles were other favorites, as well as her beloved cats Bill and Hillary. Her wit and wisdom with bountiful stamina and camaraderie have provided countless moments of joy. Nellie's story is one of strength and courage, especially in her long battle with cancer. Nellie is survived and dearly missed by her children, daughter Christina and son Christopher (Emma) and grandchildren Aidan and Maya. She will also remain forever in the hearts of her sister Mary, brothers Marlo (deceased), Carl and Richard along with many nieces, nephews and friends too numerous to mention.
