Robert B. Allen

Robert B. Allen Passed away at the age of 94 years on January 4th, 2006 in Larkspur, CA. Bob was born in Seattle, Washington, and prepared for Dartmouth College in three high schools in as many states. In 1923 he and his parents, together with other foreigners, were captured by bandits in Shantung Province, China, in what was known as the Lincheng Affair. He and the son of another Army officer, the only children taken, were released after four days. At Dartmouth Bob majored in political science and continued in that field for a half year at Harvard University before transferring to the Harvard School of Architecture. After his father's death in 1936 he left Harvard for San Francisco, where he worked as an architectural draftsman in various offices until his retirement in 1973. These years were first interrupted by WWII in which he served in Army Ordnance in Europe and in the Philippines, rising through the ranks to First Lieutenant. The second interruption came in 1955 when he enjoyed a ten month tour of the Middle East and Europe. On his return he purchased a home in Larkspur. Following his retirement he pursued his interest in the world of living plants as an active member of the Marin Chapter of the Native Plant Society. He traveled extensively throughout Europe, Asia, Mexico and South America. He was conversant in several languages. In his earlier years in San Francisco he was active in the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Northern California and Nevada, serving a term as President. He was also active in the Dartmouth Outing Club of Northern California of which he was Secretary for over twenty years. He never married nor did he leave any close relatives. He enjoyed an active outdoor lifestyle well into his 90's. His ashes will be placed with his parents' remains in Arlington National Cemetery. It was his wish that no service be held. Donations in his memory may be made to the California Native Plant Society. Arrangements under the direction of ADOBE CREEK FUNERAL HOME, 331 Lakeville Street, Petaluma, CA 94952.
