William Shore Obituary

William (Bill) Shore Jr. Age 48, of Corte Madera, died peacefully but unexpectedly on April 19, 2013 in his sleep as a result of an undetected brain tumor. Bill is survived by his wife Jena and 7-year-old son Teige. He is also survived by his parents, Jeanne and William (Bill) Shore Sr. (San Rafael), sister Karen (Jim) Dobberstein of Larkspur, and brother Tim (Kristin) Shore of San Rafael. Bill was a loving uncle to Katie, Lauren, Tom, Julia (Dobberstein), Darby, Liam (Shore), Caelen and Roan (Fry). Bill was born in San Francisco in 1964 and moved to San Rafael at the age of 5. A 1982 graduate of Marin Catholic High School, Bill discovered his life-long love of music at an early age and became an extremely accomplished drummer. By his 30s, he was a professional recording artist with the band Cola for Arista and Interscope Records, working with industry-leading producers and musicians. Bill's artistic sensibilities and keen design aesthetic led him to a successful career in graphic design. Bill will be most remembered for his humor and wit and ability to light up the room with his gregarious personality. He was an amazing listener and took a real interest in every conversation, digging for details and relishing in the interaction. Bill brought joy to so many people and the friends he made were life-long. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. A private funeral will be held on Saturday, April 27 followed by an open Celebration Gathering at 3:00PM at the San Rafael Elks Lodge located at 1312 Mission Avenue. Memorial contributions in Bill's memory may be made to Wells Fargo Bank, college fund for Teige Shore. Account number: 5398211325.

I met Bill back in 1994, but only for a brief time and space in my life. I was going through a major break up and his kindness and genuineness as a human being was refreshing. He was one of those people that you meet that you always keep in your memory as someone that you would like to run into again at some point in your life and catch up. I knew he was a talented drummer and that he was working with his band to develop a name and I remember them starting with the name Combine and then moving over to Cola. I wanted to see them play at the Bottom of the Hill, but at the time he had broken his tibia and fibula and was at home healing. I was happy to read about all of his accomplishments, and that he got to have a career that involved, what he loved: music. My deepest condolences to his wife and son and his many friends and colleagues.

“Hug Your Family”
Those 3 meaningful words Jena wrote to me today when bearing the tragic details of Bill's passing will never be forgotten.

I only knew Jena's husband through the stories and pictures she shared with me through email and their 2012 Holiday video. I am grateful for knowing this beautiful family and hope they find peace and strength in the memories that will live on forever.

Jena, please know you and Teige are in my thoughts and prayers.

Life can be so vulnerable, and unfair… Hug your Family.

I just heard the news from my mom. I grew up in the neighborhood with Bill. He was a few years older than me, but I spent many summers at the neighborhood pool with him.

My condolences to his family and friends.

Jena, and all of Bill's family and friends, I am so sorry. It's hard to even fathom. My heart goes out to all of you. What stood out most about Bill was his laugh, the twinkle in his eye, and his obvious and genuine interest in the people around him. I wish you all peace, and also wonderful memories, of a very special man.

Oh, Jena. My deepest condolences to you, Teige, and the whole family. I only knew him for a brief time, but he really was one of the good ones, and someone who could light up a room with that smile and that presence. Sending all of my love along with the hope that you and Teige are getting the support you need. He was a wonderful person, and you two were lucky to find one another. But this is much, much too soon to say goodbye, and I am heartbroken to hear of your loss. Take care, my friend. Much love to you.

Dear Jena and Teige
Today was the day that Bill and I were to meet and discuss a design project. As you know, I got to know Bill only last year and right away we hit it off. I held Bill in very esteem both as a talented designer as well as a friend with whome I could freely discuss graphic design, education, music, musicians from the Bay area (and he knew many well known performers) and life. I will miss him so. Peaceful thoughts to both of you

My sympathy and love goes out to Jena & Teige and the extended Shore & Fry families. Although Bill's passing is a very difficult time for his relatives and friends, it was evident from Bill's Celebration of Life how much he was respected and loved by those he touched during his short life.
A fitting Irish headstone reads: "Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, but Love leaves a memory no one can steal."

It's has been many many years since I have seen or spoken with Bill, but I don't think a day has gone by in all these years that I haven't had him and the group of friends from back then and his family in my thoughts. Always wondering what everyone is up to and how they are doing. Such great memories and an important time in my life. My heart is broken for his entire family and all the people that were lucky enough to have their lives touched by Bill.
Sleep well Bill.
I love you!

Bill was a great friend, sensitive, caring and very funny. I've stolen some of his funniest comments that I still use to this day. He seemed to be always positive, and although we drifted apart a bit, when we did see each other it was as if no time had passed at all. The world will miss him.

I moved to San Rafael as an 18 year old boy from the UK, and spent much time in my first year or two lonely and confused. Bill Shore stood head and shoulders above the great majority of my friends and acquaintances with regard to his depth of compassion, sensitivity and kindness - all while maintaining the requisite degree of 'cool' aspired to by all young people. He inspired me over the last two decades to aspire to the same level of empathy toward others I might meet.

Though we lost touch, I frequently thought of him, of his words, phrases, smile, his ability as a musician and ultimately, his compassion for humanity and for living. Though our friendship was brief and long ago, I am deeply saddened to hear this news. I can only imagine the pain those closer to Bill are feeling, and my greatest commiserations go to all of you. You should be extremely proud to have been part of Bill's life.

Fair winds, following seas and a peaceful rest, Bill. It was always an interesting time back then and when I hear songs, I think back to those days and our class, your comments and takes on events, even 30+ years later. Too young, too soon. My family and I send our prayers for you and your family in these difficult times.
