Albert "Al" Locati Obituary
Albert "Al" Locati His driver's license expired at 102, but six more months were to pass before he left us. Albert "Al" Locati lived a rich and full life as the "Pied Piper" of Hawthorne Avenue in San Anselmo. He was born in his family's San Anselmo home, was in the first graduating class of St. Anselm's School, and resided for 68 years at his Hawthorne address. Soon after his 100th birthday he moved to Nazareth House in San Rafael. He was known to many in town and was the "kingpin" of his neighborhood, becoming part of everyone's family. In his later years, these same neighbors looked after him, providing meals, transportation and friendship. Al saw many changes in his lifetime. He used to take the train to Tam High. Later he worked for the Bank of Italy under AP Giannini, which became the Bank of America. He joined the navy during WWII and was stationed at Pearl Harbor. He retired early to take care of his lovely wife Eleanor for many years. Both she and his daughter Christine preceded him in death. For many years he grew his own vegetables, washed and hung his clothes outside, cooked excellent Italian meals for himself with the ritual glass of wine, and did all of his cleaning, shopping and chores. Al's memory and mind remained alert long after his body and eyesight grew tired and weak. He was engaging company for all who survive him. He leaves a grandson Justin Steeves (Shannon) and four great grandchildren: Colin, Trinity, Aliyah and Samuel, nieces and a nephew, and many old and new friends and neighbors. He is especially thankful for the care from Nazareth House, Hospice by the Bay, Marilee Rogers, and his cadre of Hawthorne neighbors who will miss him dearly. We can honor Al's memory by being good neighbors and friends. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Anselm's Church on Friday December 6 at 10:30AM followed by a reception in the adjacent Centennial Hall. Contributions can me made to Hospice by the Bay or Nazareth House. Monte's Chapel of the Hills (415) 453-8440
