ANGELO COLOMBO Obituary

Angelo "Ang" Colombo Coach, Teacher, World War II Veteran P-51 Fighter Pilot Angelo Colombo, aged 90, father of four children and devoted husband of Marianne Colombo passed away on December 8th, 2010 with his loving family surrounding him. Angelo is preceded in death by his parents, Giovanni and Giovanina Colombo. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marianne Imelda (Sullivan) Colombo, his children and spouses, Suzanne Burns (Jim Burns), Patricia Colombo (David Ruprecht), Russell Colombo (Lynn Colombo), and Stephen Colombo; six grandchildren, Ali Burns (Todd Porter), Maia Burns (Ryan Ritter), Angela Colombo (Django Heckler), Kevin Colombo, Daniel Colombo, John Colombo; three great grand-children, Emerson Ritter, Beckett Ritter, and Brody Porter, and his brother, (Enrico) Harry Colombo of Santa Rosa. Angelo was a beloved teacher and coach at San Rafael High School and a respected member of the Marin County community. He touched the lives of so many young adults during his 35 years at SRHS whether it was on the basketball court, in the classroom, as Athletic Director, or as Dean of Boys. His positive impact was felt by countless individuals for many years. Angelo was born on May 19, 1920 in Cassano Magnago, Italy. After immigrating to the United States, his family settled in San Rafael. Ang attended San Rafael High School where he graduated in 1939. His college years were spent at College of Marin and San Jose State where he played intercollegiate basketball and baseball. After graduation he played Triple A professional baseball in San Jose for a short time. Angelo joined the Air Force in 1941 and was trained as a fighter pilot. He flew P 51 Mustangs during World War II in the South Pacific, completing 130 missions. Ang was twice decorated with the Air Force Medal. Ang and Marianne were married after the war in 1946 at Holy Names Church in San Francisco. He began his teaching career in Modesto before returning to his Alma Mater, San Rafael High School to teach History, Health and Physical Education. He also coached basketball and baseball for many years. In addition to his teaching, Ang was active in the community. He helped organize the first Little League program in San Rafael, was an active member of Kiwanis Club and was instrumental in building a baseball facility and park near the present intersection of 3rd Street and Highway 101 in San Rafael. Ang was a lifelong member of St. Raphael's Parish. He retired from teaching in 1978 and was inducted into the Marin County Athletic Hall of Fame in 1991. Ang was the first recipient of San Rafael High School's Wall of Honor in 2009 along with his lifelong friend, Hugo Rinaldi. He was also honored as the Marin County Italian American Citizen of the year in 2009. Angelo Colombo, regarded as a legend in San Rafael, was one of a kind and will be greatly missed by his family, his friends, and this community that he loved so dearly. We will miss you Ang. God Bless you. There will be a memorial mass celebrating Ang Colombo's life at St. Raphael's Church on Tuesday, December 14th at 11:00AM. A reception immediately following will be held at the San Rafael Recreation Center on B Street in San Rafael. In lieu of flowers, the family would like to request that donations be made to the Marin Athletic Foundation, P.O. Box 150930, San Rafael, CA, 94915 or Hospice by the Bay, 17 E. Dear Marianne and Family: Like so many others, Ang was my history teacher and my coach. More than that, he was a good friend. I especially remember working with Ang's dad at Albert Field during the summer of '52, just before my senior year; Ang would stop by often to see his dad and I got many invitations to join him at his folks' house after work. His enthusiasm and understanding of his students needs made attending San Rafael High a great experience. Although he seldom mentioned WW II, he was the epitome of "The Greatest Generation." Ang will be missed by many but never forgotten by anyone ....

Condolences and fond memories of Angelo. From 1951 to about 1959 he was my next door neighbor on Jewell St, in San Rafael. A wonderful guy to have had next door to a pre-teen, and then teenager. My Mom passed in 1995 and I'm hoping they share a few memories.
The best to his family,
Pat Carroll (84 Jewell at that time)

I have many memories of your dad coaching at St Raphaels grammar school. You guys would always beat us St Anselm's bums. Your dad had great ability for coaching those with minimal talent. He was an inspiration on and off the court.

To me, he was the paragon of the high school coach. He combined discipline and warmth which resulted in my life long respect for him. I used to talk to my kids about MY coach--Angelo Colombo--especially when telling them,"Catch the ball with 2 hands".
When I reminisce about the "good old days" at SRHS, Mr Colombo is right in there with the best of my memories

Dear Colombo Family,
I am very sorry for your loss. I will remember Mr. Colombo for his wonderful ability to make people feel special. As my B-Basketball coach 40+ years ago he was inspirational and spirited and it was my privilege to have played for him. I still remember the tip that was passed on to me from the Colombo girls through my sister Roni when they learned I was playing for Coach Colombo, “Watch out when he pokes his tongue into his cheek….he’s about to blow!”
I want to offer my sympathy to all of you at this difficult time. I hope that you will find some comfort in knowing that Mr. Colombo will remain in the warmest thoughts and memories of a very large community of friends long beyond his passing.

Marianne and family,
Ang was a "real" American hero with rugged Hollywood good looks at the controls of one of the fastest war planes of the times. He meant a lot to the Young family especially his goddaughter, Christina. Chris and Virginia are just sorry that they were unable to arrange to join you for his service. May God support you in your time of grief and know our love is with you.

Our deepest condolences to the entire Colombo family. We never got the chance to meet Ang, but through Patti's stories, impressions, and reminiscences we feel as though we knew him well. He obviously was a dear, wonderful, and funny man. And if Ang's only legacy is his gift of Patti to the world, then his life was full and complete.
With love,
Bob and Marianne Goen

I was greatly saddened to hear of Ang's passing. I have many fond memories of Ang and SRHS. I remember the times in the late 50's when we would climb through the upper windows of the old gym to play basketball. Ang would come in and tell us to leave and be out the door before anyone could move. He had warned us and we would have said he did, but we continued to play, as he knew we would. As students we are very fortunate to meet a teacher that inspires you throughout your life. I think that he is the main reason I became a teacher and coach. Many times in the last 50 years I have reflected on Ang's positive influence on me. I want to extend by deepest sympathies to the entire family he will always be remembered with fond memories.

Ang Colombo was my basketball coach and one of my favorite PE teachers at SRHS in the late 1950's. I had the pleasure of meeting with him and his wife last year as we were planning our Class of 1959 50th reunion. A very impressive career, a great man!

Mrs. Colombo and family, I fondly remember Mr. Colombo. He was one of the most popular teachers in the school. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Sincerely, Sheryl Smith Payne

I am so sorry to hear of Ang's death, but I am sure it was time for him to go. Ang and I worked together as heads of the PE departments at SRHS. Together we planned the current PE outdoor facilities, and we started the PE program that later received recognition by Sports Illustrated as the outstanding PE program of the nation. SRHS was a better school because he taught there, and I am a better person because Ang was my friend and co-worker. I will miss him.

Dear Colombo family,
May God's peace be with you all as you remember Angelo.
I knew him in 1954 when he was teaching me history at San Rafael High School. He was definitely the nicest teacher I ever had.
My parents and I used to go to the local San Rafael baseball field at Albert Park to watch Mr. Columbo and Mr. Simontacchi play baseball on the local baseball team.
Wonderful memories!
God be with you,
