BARBARA ANN POOLE Obituary
Barbara Ann Poole Barbara Ann Poole passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her family and a few dear friends, on Monday, December 2, 2013. Barbara was born in San Pedro, CA March 8, 1936. Barbara was raised by her mother Lillian Buschmann, and grandparents Martha Matilda and Charles Reveny. Barbara attended Spring Valley Elementary in San Francisco, Marina Junior High School in San Francisco and Tamalpais High School in Mill Valley, graduating in 1953. After high school, Barbara was a dental hygienist, working for Dr. Cudworth, when she met J. Gordon Poole. Barbara and Gordon were married in 1954, and thrived as husband and wife for 56 years until Gordon passed away in 2010. Barbara and Gordon had three children and six grandchildren. Gordon's career allowed Barbara to create homes on five continents, including three separate occasions in South Africa, Australia, Chile and Portugal, while always maintaining their home in Lucas Valley, Marin County, for the last 45 years. Barbara and Gordon shared a common love of exotic, warm weather vacations, traveling on many occasions to in the Caribbean, Mexico and Hawaii. As well as raising her family, Barbara was a conscientious friend and active community member, including 10 years as an Election Day Poll worker at her local voting precinct. Early on, Barbara was an avid bowler and golfer, and was an early member of the Marin Tennis Club. For the last 30 years, Barbara was a dedicated member of the Lucas Valley daily "walkie/talkies" group, and longtime member of the San Francisco Yacht Club. Always providing a compassionate ear, and being a talented and willing dancer, Barbara attracted loyal friends and acquaintances, all appreciating her style, generosity and joy of life. Barbara earned Silver Life Master status as a member of the American Contract Bridge Association and enjoyed participating in international competitions as well as locally with her fellow bridge colleagues at the Terra Linda and Belvedere community centers. Barbara's last bridge outings only weeks ago proved to be a metaphor for her amazing life. Figuratively, Barbara successfully bid her hand 7 no trump grand slam, a contract successfully closed. A life fabulously lived. A special person who will be deeply missed. Barbara is survived by daughter Lori Bergemann and grandchildren Scott and Kelsey of Roseville; daughter Leslie and James Ruhland, and grandchildren Tristan, Schyler and Weston of Tiburon; son Gordon and Amy Poole, and granddaughter Georgiana of San Jose; nieces Cathie O'Callaghan of San Anselmo, Jennifer Capps of Concord and Carissa Buschmann of Auburn; nephew Bill O'Callaghan of Denver, CO, brother David Buschmann of Lafayette, IN, and cousin Jack Oldfin of Naples, FL; and Popcorn, her devoted cat for the past 19 years. A celebration of Barbara's life will be hosted by the family December 22, 2013, 2PM, at the family residence at 31 Mt. Lassen Drive, San Rafael, CA 94903. RSVP's are not required but appreciated by either emailing poole31@lvha.net or calling (415)499-5670. In lieu of flowers, Barbara requested contributions be made in her honor to the Pitt-Hopkins Research Foundation, the leading genetic research organization dedicated to finding a cure to the genetic disorder her granddaughter, Georgiana, was diagnosed with two years ago.
