James (Jim) Nelson Lombard Of Birmingham, Alabama died Friday, July 13, 2012, at his Birmingham home. He was born in Glendale, CA. He was the first born of two sons to Nelson Kenneth and Eva McLellan Lombard. Early in his career, Lombard was a partner in Del Madera Properties in California. Over the course of 36 years, Jim served communities through the YMCA in camp, program, administrative and executive roles. In 1987, he served as Vice President/Branch Executive in the Atlanta Association. In 1994, he became the Sr. VP of Operations for the Birmingham Association and in 1996 he became the President/CEO for the YMCA of Greater Birmingham. Under his leadership the Birmingham YMCA grew from 7 branches with $1.5M budget to 14 Operational Centers and a $25M budget; established the first YMCA Junior Board of Directors and the Birmingham YMCA Youth Center "for all things youth." Jim earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Recreation and Park Management from the University of Oregon. He was named the YMCA Executive of the Year in 1991 and 1993. He served for a decade on a subcommittee of the YMCA of the USA Board of Directors, as the Chair of the Salary Administration Task Force. Jim served on the board of Youth Leadership Forum; the Sharing Committee of the Birmingham Alliance; was a delegate to President Clinton's Summit for America's Future; was a United Way Loaned Executive in 1996; was a member of the Birmingham Kiwanis; was a 1997 graduate of Leadership Birmingham, as well as a past board member of Operation New Birmingham. Jim leaves to cherish his memory a loving and devoted wife, Laura; one brother, Michael Ray Lombard of Alpharetta, GA; two daughters, Jennifer Ellen Lombard of Birmingham; Emily Lombard (Travis) Hollett, and a son, Benjamin Thomas Lombard both of Nashville, TN; two sisters-in-law, Greg Moore of Plantation, FL, and Jacqueline Steele Lombard of Alpharetta, GA; a nephew, Kenneth Steele Lombard, and a niece, Jeanine Steele Lombard, both of Alpharetta, GA; his beloved animals, and a host of relatives, friends and colleagues.
